    Abstract: The present invention provides a method and apparatus for maximizing throughput of a data call in a wireless communication system in which data is transmitted from a wireless station, such as a mobile station, on multiple assigned channels in accordance with a known transmission standard, such as IS-95B. The multiple assigned channels include a fundamental channel and at least one supplemental channel. Data is formatted into variable rate data frames and transmitted on the fundamental channel and the supplemental channel. A wireless receiver, such as a base station, receives the multiple assigned channels. The wireless receiver demodulates and decodes data frames associated with each of the multiple assigned channels. The wireless receiver determines a likely initial data rate for each demodulated and decode data frame. The wireless receiver correlates all of the likely data rates, by comparison to one another and to a relevant transmission protocol standard, to determine a maximum likelihood combination of data rates. The maximum likelihood combination of data rates includes a maximum likelihood data rate corresponding to each likely data rate. Decoded data frames are invalidated and erased when the likely data frame rates do not match corresponding maximum likelihood data rates.

    Abstract: A method to enhance performance of a dual-mode or dual-band mobile phone includes, after the phone has initially connected to a CDMA wireless network, monitoring a level of total power received by the phone. This power level is compared to a preset threshold level. If the power level remains below the threshold level for over two seconds, the dual-mode or dual-band phone switches to an AMPS or other network retrieved from the preferred roaming list that is stored in the phone. If the power level is above the threshold, the phone moves into the idle state. Once in the idle state, both the pilot strength and Received Signal Strength Indication are monitored. If both of these levels are below respective thresholds for over eight seconds, the phone switches to another network stored in the preferred roaming list. If the mobile phone is not a dual-mode or dual-band phone, the mobile phone can perform similar measurements and switch between service provider systems compatible with the mobile phone.

    Abstract: A system for improving the efficiency of a wireless communications network that employs a plurality of frequencies per cell. The system includes a first mechanism that monitors the network load associated with each of the plurality of frequencies and provides corresponding status values in response thereto. A second mechanism compares the status values to predetermined loading criteria and provides an indication in response thereto when one or more of the status values meet the criteria. A third mechanism redistributes the network load in accordance with the indication. In a specific embodiment, the criteria include one or more predetermined thresholds such that when one or more of the predetermined thresholds is surpassed by the one or more of the status values, the criteria are met. The status values are representative of loading conditions for communications system resources associated with each of the frequencies. The loading conditions are representative of currently available resources allocated for each of the plurality of frequencies. Each status value includes a hardware resource component, an air link resource component, and a handling resource component. Each component is indicative of respective remaining resources. The hardware resource component incorporates the number of currently available channel elements for an associated frequency. The air link resource component incorporates transmit power available for a particular frequency. The handling resource component incorporates the number of available Walsh codes for a particular frequency.

    Abstract: A system and method for detecting discontinuous transmission (DTX) frames. The inventive method includes the steps of receiving data transmitted in a plurality of frames; classifying each of the frames; analyzing the classification of a number of successive frames of the received data and providing a metric with respect thereto; and determining, in response to the metric, if a frame is a discontinuous frame. In the illustrative embodiment, the step of classifying includes the step of error checking the frames using a cyclic redundancy check (CRC) error checking protocol. The received frames are classified as good frames (G), erasure frames (E), or discontinuous frames (D). A numerical value is assigned to each of the frames based on the classification thereof. Next, the frames are filtered to provide an output Yn=Yn-1+Xn where 'n' is a frame number, Yn is the filter output for a given frame n, Yn-1 is the filter output for a previous frame, and Xn is a stream of input frames. A threshold is set for the output Yn to facilitate the detection of discontinuous frames. That is, a detection of a discontinuous transmission frame is indicated when a frame is classified as an 'erasure' and the filter output exceeds the threshold. On the detection of a discontinuous frame, the classification of the frame is changed from 'erasure' to 'discontinuous'. By reclassifying improperly classified erasure frames, the mobile receiver is inhibited from requesting retransmission of the frames or a change in the transmit power level. Consequently, network throughput and capacity are optimized and system power is conserved.
