Abstract: In accordance with a method for increasing the capacity of a channel in a communications system, characteristics of a channel may be evaluated. The c hannel may include a plurality of slots, and the slots may have a slot forma t among a set of slot formats. A slot format among the set of slot formats m ay be selected. The selection may be based on the evaluated characteristics of the channel. Selecting the slot format may include selecting the position of a signal within each of the plurality of slots. The position of the sign al may be different for each of the slot formats. The signal may be transmit ted in each of the plurality of slots over the channel.

Abstract: Techniques for sending control information on a variable control channel are described. Different structures for mapping control information to contr ol channel resources may be used depending on various factors such as operat ing configuration, the available resources for the control channel, the type (s) of control information being sent, the amount of control information bei ng sent for each type, whether or not data is being sent, etc. In one design , at least one type of control information being sent may be determined and may comprise channel quality indicator (CQI) information, acknowledgement (A CK) information, and/or other types of control information. A structure of t he control channel may be determined based on operating configuration (e.g., system configuration such as asymmetry of downlink and uplink allocations) and/or other factors. The at least one type of control information may be ma pped to the resources for the control channel based on the structure.

Abstract: The present invention is a novel and improved method and apparatus for reducing peak to average ratio in a system using auxiliary pilot channels as described in the TIA/EIA TR45.5 "cdma2000 ITU-R RTT Candidate Submission" to the ITU for consideration in the third generation wireless communication systems. A first method proposed in the present invention to deal with the above stated problem is to alter the phase of the auxiliary pilot channels to reduce to prevent the auxiliary pilot channels from adding constructively. A second method proposed in the present invention to deal with the above stated problem is to gate out the portion of the auxiliary pilot channels that add constructively. The present invention also proposes a novel demodulator design for receiving signals using the modified auxiliary pilot signals.

Abstract: A novel and improved method and apparatus, in a WCDMA communication system, for informing a mobile station of a downlink data frame time offset by determining the downlink data frame time offset, and transmitting the downlink data frame time offset via an Active Set Update message transmitted from a cell to mobile station. Once an Active Set Update message is received, the data frame time offset information is provided to a timing block which may determine data frame boundary of each downlink signal. Timing block may then adjust the PN sequence timing corresponding to the downlink signal associated with the data frame time offset such that corresponding data symbols in each data frame are correctly soft combined in a combiner.

Abstract: An efficient retransmission of data using symbol accumulation wherein the packet received in error is retransmitted at a lower energy-per-bit level concurrently in the same frame with the new packet. The destination device receives the data transmission and retransmission, demodulate the signal, and separates the received data into the new and retransmitted packet. The destination device then accumulates the energy of the retransmitted packet with the energy already accumulated for the packet received in error and decodes the accumulated packet. The accumulation of the additional energy provided by th e subsequent retransmissions improves the probability of a correct decoding. The throughput rate can be improved since the packet received in error is retransmitted concurrently with the transmission of the new data packet. The capacity is maximized since the retransmission o f the packet received in error is at a lower energy level than that of the new packet.

Abstract: Unassigned finger processors are used to process and measure the arrival times of transmissions from base stations not in the active set. A first set of one or more base stations in active communication with the remote terminal is identified and each base station in the first set is assigned at least one finger processor. A second set of one or more base stations not in active communication with the remote terminal is also identified and an available finger processor is assigned to each of at least one base station in the second set. A (signal arrival) time measurement is then performed for each base station, and outputs indicative of the measurements are provided for further processing.
