Abstract: In an optical disc player in which a reading light beam is caused to impinge on an optical disc having a record track formed with an alignment of geometric variations such as a plurality of pits provided in response to information to be modulated in intensity by the record track and a photodetector is provided for detecting the reading light beam coming from the optical disc to generate an output varying in response to the variations in intensity of the detected reading light beam; there are provided a first circuit for producing a reproduced information signal having level variations representing the geometric variations and a tracking error signal which may have level variations depending on the size of each segment of the geometric variations on the strength of the output of the photodetector, a second circuit for detecting the duration of a portion corresponding to each segment of the geometric variations of the reproduced information signal or output of the photodetector and extracting selectively the level of the tracking error signal whenever the detected duration is measured within a predetermined time range so as to produce a modified tracking error signal having the extracted level, and a control circuit for performing tracking control in relation to the reading light beam in response to the modified tracking error signal.

Abstract: An optical pickup incorporates a two-lens system with first and second lenses (13) and (14) being arranged in the following manner: the first lens has a first surface (15) to receive a laser beam radiated from a semiconductor laser and a second surface (16) to direct the laser beam transmitted from the first surface (15) towards the second lens (14); the second lens (14) has a third surface (17) to receive the light flux transmitted from the second surface (16) and a fourth surface (18) to direct the light flux transmitted from the third surface (17) towards an optical disc placed opposite thereto; and the first and fourth surfaces (15, 18) are used as a reference during positioning. The aberrations of the optical pickup are limited within a tolerable limit without incorporating a special device for that purpose even if errors arise in thickness of component lenses of a two-lens system constituting an element of the pickup.

The voltage (V1, V2, V3) applied across said regions is changed depending on the tilt of the optical recording medium for correcting the coma aberrations of the light beam on the information recording surface (106).

Abstract: An optical pickup includes a light source (21) for radiating a light beam, a diffraction element (22) for separating a light beam radiated from the light source into at least three beams, namely a main beam and two side beams, an objective lens (25) for converging the light beams separated by the diffraction element onto a signal recording surface of an optical recording medium (11), a light receiving unit (24) having a four-segment first light receiving portion (71) for receiving the main beam reflected by the recording surface of the optical recording medium and second and third light receiving portions (72, 73) arranged on respective sides of the first light receiving portion (71) for receiving the side beams reflected by the recording surface of the optical recording medium, and a calculation unit (26) for generating one tracking signal based on respective outputs of the first light receiving portion and for generating another tracking signal based on outputs of the second and third light receiving portions. In preferred emodiments of the apparatus, a disc discrimination unit sends a detection output of the optical disc both to the changeover switch selecting the desired tracking error signal and to an aperture ratio variable control unit.

Abstract: Laser light beams for first and second laser light sources (11, 12) having different wavelengths are synthesized by a dichroic mirror (16) and irradiated on a magneto-optical disc (20) forming a recordable disc, and the reflected light is separated into the laser light of the first and second wavelengths. In respect of the laser light of the first wavelength, the phase difference between the P and S-polarization components produced by the dichroic mirror 16 is compensated by a phase compensation plate (32), and the P and S-polarization components are separated from each other by a polarization beam splitter (36) so as to be received by photodetector elements (37, 38). The dichroic mirror (16) used in such the difference between the minimum transmittance in a working range of the laser light of the first wavelength and the maximum transmittance in a working range of the laser light of the second wavelength is 90% or higher for reducing changes in the phase difference between the P and S-polarization components.
