Abstract: A block key to encrypt block data is generated using an ATS (arrival time stamp) appended to each of TS (transport stream) packets included in a transport stream correspondingly to the arrival time of the TS packet. The ATS is a random data depending upon an arrival time, and so a block-unique key can be generated, which enhances the protection against data cryptanalysis. A block key is generated from a combination of an ATS with a key unique to a device, recording medium or the like such as a master key, disc-unique key, title-unique key or the like. Since an ATS is used to generate a block key, any area for storage of an encryption key for each block may not be provided in a recording medium.

Abstract: An information processing system and method for realizing efficient processing using an enabling key block (EKB) using a categorized tree structure. An EKB composed of encrypting data for encrypting an upper-order key by using a lower-order key on a selection path of a key tree having sub-trees managed by a category entity is created and provided to a device. When a request to create an EKB is made, a structure for creating a route key by itself or a structure for requesting a key distribution center to create a route key is selectively executed. Further a structure for requesting a category entity to create a sub-EKB when the EKB distribution center creates an EKB is provided, and therefore the EKB creation and management are made efficient.

Abstract: When the recording mode of an information recording/playback device is a cognizant mode which analyzes embedded copy control information, the information recording/playback device performs content encryption using a content-encryption key generated by using a cognizant key as a content-encryption-key generating key in the cognizant mode. When the recording mode of the information recording/playback device is a non-cognizant mode which does not analyze the embedded copy control information, the information recording/playback device performs content encryption using a content-encryption key generated by using a cognizant key as a content-encryption-key generating key in the non-cognizant mode. By using these techniques, the above two recording modes are clearly distinguished and separately executed. This prevents an encryption mode indicator as copy control information and embedded copy control information from being mismatched.

Abstract: The enabling key block (EKB) used in an encrypted key distributing constitution of a tree structure is generated by reconstructing a simplified 2-branch or multi-branch type tree with a terminal node or leaf which can decrypt as the lowest stage, and on the basis of only the key corresponding to a node or a leaf of the reconstructed hierarchical tree. A considerable reduction in data quantity is realized, and decrypting process, in a device is also simplified. Thus, an information processing system and method capable of reducing data quantity of an enabling key block (EKB) used in an encrypted key constitution of a tree structure is realized.

Abstract: An optical disc recorder/reproducer, a personal computer, a television receiver, an IRD and so forth are connected mutually via a 1394 serial bus. When data transmitted from the personal computer to the optical disc recorder/reproducer via the 1394 serial bus are to be recorded, an isochronous packet is sent to the recorder/reproducer inclusive of the data to indicate whether the personal computer is a device capable of cognizing copy control information. And depending on whether the source of the transmitted data is a copy control information cognizant device or not, the optical disc recorder/reproducer updates the copy control information with reference to a selected table, and then the updated copy control information is recorded on the optical disc. This system can distinguish between a prerecorded disc and a user-recorded disc, hence achieving exact management of copy control information.
