Abstract: A diode laser structure (10) is thermally stabilized by passing current through heater strips (28) along the sides of the diode laser cavity (26). The diode laser structure comprises a first confinement layer (14) and a substrate (12) of one conductivity type, an active layer (16), a second confinement layer (18) and a contact layer (20) of an opposing conductivity type. Disordered regions (24) extend from the contact layer through to the first confinement layer defining diode laser cavities. Resistive regions (28, 32) are formed within the disordered regions. Individual contacts on the contact layer aligned with each diode laser cavity inject current through the diode laser cavity to the contact on the substrate, causing emission of coherent radiation through an edge face of the diode laser structure. Individual contacts on the contact layer aligned with resistive regions inject current through the resistive region to the contact on the substrate, causing generation of heat. The resistive region within the disordered region forms a heater strip, and adjacent heater strips maintain the temperature within the diode laser cavity between the adjacent disordered regions of the heater strips. The resistive region (28) can be replaced with a diffused region (50) to provide a forward biased p-n junction to form the heater strip. The contacts (84, 86) for the laser cavity and the heater strips can be interdigitated.

Abstract: A color correction method is provided for an electronic printing system that results in a color print that is made as close as possible to what an operator actually observes on a monitor screen (What you see is what you get). The printing system includes a computer, a color printer, and a color monitor. A calibration is automatically performed by the system's computer through the use of calibration software, a series of test patterns stored in the computer memory, a monitor calibrating device, and a scanner equipped with color trichromatic measurement capabilities.

Abstract: An apparatus for improving the depth of focus in a raster output scanner (ROS), and more particularly to a system for maximizing the line separation depth of focus of a multispot ROS while maintaining the system common depth of focus. The apparatus comprises: a source of at least two light beams (A,B; Fig. 1); a scanning polygon mirror having at least one facet (92); pre-scanning optics including a collimator (84), an aperture (86) and a cross-scan cylinder lens (88); and post-scanning optics including a dual element (94a,94b) f-theta scan lens (94) and a wobble correcting element. In a preferred design for a ROS-based system, the system common depth of focus (system common DOF) is maximized, where the system common DOF is characterized as the depth-of-focus over which all performance parameters are met. The optical system design achieves a desirable system common DOF while maintaining a line separation of 127 mu m (1/200 inch).

Abstract: An apparatus and method for efficiently and automatically monitoring and adjusting the power output of laser diodes used to provide the scanning beams in a raster output scanner (ROS) system. Light radiated from the back facet of the laser diode is directed onto at least a pair of back facet photodiodes. The photodiode outputs are proportional to the power output of the laser diode associated with the photodiode. The polarization of the laser diode back facet output is controlled so as to ensure that the only outputs from an associated laser diode is sensed by an associated photodiode. In one embodiment, a half wave plate is used to rotate the polarization of one of the laser diodes and in another embodiment optical fibers efficiently transmit light emitted from the back facets to the photodiode.

Abstract: A raster scanning system includes a beam generator (6) which generates a beam of radiant energy in response to a drive signal. The drive signal comprising a series of pulses. The raster scanning system includes a polygon (4) having an overfilled facet design in which a plurality of facets are at least partially positioned in the optical path of the beam of radiant energy regardless of the rotational position of the polygon. The polygon is adapted to scan a spot across a beam receiving surface. The raster scanning system includes spot size correcting means for maintaining a constant spot size of the scanned spot from start of scan (WSOS) to end of scan (WEOS) by modulating the pulse width of the drive signal provided to the beam generator.
