    Abstract: A scanning apparatus wherein the illumination scanning means (32) employed travels at a rate which is greater than that of a flat photoreceptor (42) moving in the same direction. In one embodiment, a dual rate mirror assembly (34, 38) scans a document (30) on a platen at a first rate which is greater than the process speed set for a photoreceptor belt. The image is projected through a lens (4U) and precessed by a mirror arrangement (41) along the belt surface in a direction opposite to the belt travel. The precession rate can be set relative to the scanning flyback time, so as to reduce or eliminate an interdocument gap on the photoreceptor and to lower process speeds for a given copy rate.

    Abstract: FACETTED REFLECTOR A photocopier has a scanning illumination device for incrementally illuminating an object disposed on an object surface. The scanning illumination device includes a linear light source that is disposed adjacent to the object surface and which has an aperture that defines a portion through which light is directed to a scan strip on the object surface. Operatively connected to the light source is a reflector having its reflective surface disposed in opposed relationship to the aforementioned aperture so as to direct reflective light from the light source to the object surface. The reflector has a number of plain mirror facets, each facet being disposed at a particular angle to a plane normal to the object surface and having a particular surface face length so that each facet face, as viewed from an instantaneous scan line lying on the scan strip, is completely filled with light from the source. Means are provided to effect relative scan travel of the object surface and the illumination system.

    Abstract: A color correction method is provided for an electronic printing system that results in a color print that is made as close as possible to what an operator actually observes on a monitor screen (What you see is what you get). The printing system includes a computer, a color printer, and a color monitor. A calibration is automatically performed by the system's computer through the use of calibration software, a series of test patterns stored in the computer memory, a monitor calibrating device, and a scanner equipped with color trichromatic measurement capabilities.

    Abstract: An illumination system for a document copying machine including an optical cavity having interior walls coated with a white, diffusely reflecting material. One end of the cavity contains a platen for positioning a document to be copied while the opposing end contains a lens for forming an image of the document on a light sensitive image plane. Illumination from a single flash illumination source located within the cavity, undergoes multiple reflections from the walls resulting in a uniform diffuse illumination of the document. An optical element is positioned above the lamp to prevent direct light from striking the platen and, in a preferred embodiment, has an aperture therein for increasing illumination of the platen area overlying the lamp-blocker mounting.
