Abstract: Signature printing with an automatic duplexing copier (10) by simultaneously presenting plural document sheets (F1, F2, etc.) to the imaging station (23) of the copier in a predetermined nonserial page order for producing a set of signature copy sheets (S1, S2, etc.) suitable for subsequent center-folding into signature sets. A normal serial set of document sheets is loaded into an automatic document re-ordering and presenting system (20) (associated with the copier) which automatically reorders that set of document sheets into a predetermined nonserial reordered page order for signature pair page order "two-up" copying. The pairs of automatically reordered document sheets are preserted automatically to the imaging station of the copier to be copied in the reordered page order to provide collated page order signature sets automatically with the copier for on-line center-folding and finishing without requiring any manual reordering of either the document sheets or the signature copy sheets. The automatic re-ordering includes automatic 180 DEG rotation of alternate pairs of simplex document sheets to provide proper orientation of the document pages for the automatic duplex copier. The document sheets are either automatically separated into two stacks for two document sheets to be presented simultaneously lengthwise (short-edge-first) in parallel to one side of the imaging station (see Fig. 3a), or reordered into one stack for sideways (long-edge-first) presentation from an orthogonal direction (see Fig. 3b).

Abstract: An automatic pre-collation duplex copying apparatus (10, 20) and method in which original documents having either an odd or even number of pages may be recirculatively copied (26) in reverse serial order yet provide properly collated output duplex copy sets. A simplex/duplex copying system is disclosed in which, when an odd number of document sheets are detected (29, 31, 100) in a first, non-copying, circulation of the document sheets, the copying of the last and subsequent alternate document sheets is inhibited during the first copying circulation, whereas if an even number of document sheets are detected, the copying of the second and subsequent alternate document sheets is inhibited during this first copying circulation, and these different copying sequences are reversed for the last copying circulation. All document sheets are copied during the intermediate circulations. A compatible duplex/duplex copying system is also disclosed.

Abstract: PARTIALLY SUBMERGED ACTIVE CROSSMIXER An active crossmixer comprising a pair of rotatably driven augers and a baffle for partially submerging the augers in developer is mounted in the development system of an electrostatic processor above the sump in a position to intercept the developer returning from the development zone and any additional toner added to maintain the toner concentration at a suitable high level. The developer is divided between the augers which, in turn, laterally transport the developer in opposite directions. Preferably, the baffle is apertured so that developer not only flows over the ends of the baffle but also through the baffle, thereby distributing the developer across the full width of the sump.

Abstract: A REGISTRATION STATION Apparatus for registering a sheet with respect to perpendicularly related axes is disclosed. Structurally, each embodiment disclosed includes (a) a sleeve for internally accomodating a sheet, at least one point on an inner narrow wall of the sleeve being aligned in parallel with one of the axes; (b) a retractable gate located at one end of the sleeve, in one position the gate having at least one point aligned in parallel with the other of the axes; and (c) means for providing in the sleeve a fluid stream having velocity components normal to each of the axes, whereby when the gate is in said position and a sheet is placed in the sleeve, the stream moves the sheet into abutment with each of said points.

Abstract: A system wherein documents are presented to a platen of a xerographic system includes a housing in which a rack for storing documents is located. The rack includes a plurality of pockets in each of which a document may be stored, the rack being movable in a vertical direction so that any one of its pockets may be aligned with an opening in the housing. A document handler resting on the platen and having a fluidically lubricated platform is used to feed documents placed on the platform through the opening and into pockets of the rack. The document handler cooperates with the platen to provide a rectangular document pocket and documents in the rack may be shuttled to and from the document pocket. Fluid streams are used to initiate movement of a document being shuttled. Documents moved to the platen are orthogonally registered with a pair of walls of the document pocket, and copies of the registered documents may be made by the xerographic system.

Abstract: A system for presenting documents to a xerographic exposure station includes a first fluidic storage station in which a rack for storing documents is located. The rack includes a plurality of pockets in each of which a document may be stored, the rack being movable in a vertical direction. A fluid stream is used to move a document in a pocket out of the storage apparatus through an opening and into orthogonal registration at the exposure station. Exposed documents are fluidically moved to a second fluidic storage station which is similar to the first, the exiting direction being generally transverse to the path followed by a document in entering the exposure station. Vertical movement of the racks at the first and second storage stations is used to serially feed documents to the exposure stations and to provide a pocket for each of the exposed documents.

Abstract: 1481365 Magnetic brush developing apparatus XEROX CORP 17 April 1975 [29 April 1974 (3)] 15887/75 Heading G2H The sump 13 of the apparatus, into which residual developer and fresh toner particles 36 are fed via a cross mixer 54, is closeable across part or all of its outlet 32 by a pivotal magnetic gate 44 shown in the open and closed positions in Figs. 1 and 2 respectively. A single gate 44 may be used to close the whole width of the outlet 32. Alternatively, for example, two end gates and a centre gate may be used, the end gates being selectively moveable together to allow flow of developer 14 only through the centre portion of the width of the outlet 32 when developing images of less than the maximum width, and the centre gate being independantly closeable so that all three gates may be closed together to stop the flow of developer 14 completely.
