Abstract: 618,973. Gramophone pick-ups. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION. Sept. 6, 1946, No. 26795. Convention date, Sept. 10, 1945. [Class 40 (ii)] [Also in Groups XXXIX and XL (a)] An electromechanical transducer of the thermionic valve type is characterised by a flexible wall supporting a movable electrode, the compliance of the wall in one plane being greater than in any other plane. As shown, a gramophone pick-up comprises a thermionic valve in which the stylus moves the grid to vary the current through the valve. The valve has four pins, two for supplying alternating current to the heating filament, one for connecting earth to the cathode and one for connecting a positive potential to the anode. The screen grid 30 is carried by a post rigidly connected to a thin diaphragm 28 and connected to the stylus 37 engaging the record. The diaphragm may be corrugated to increase the compliance laterally. To reduce vibration pick-up, the vertical compliance may be increased by mounting the stylus on a horizontal leaf spring 58, Fig. 7, or (Fig. 8, not shown) on a U-shaped leaf spring.

Abstract: 644,610. Thermionic valves. COMPAGNIE GENERALE DE TELEGRAPHIE SANS FIL. Sept. 29, 1947, No. 26292. Convention date, Oct. 4, 1946. [Class 39 (i)] A device for adjusting axially the position of the cathode in a coaxial conducting part 2 of an electron discharge tube comprises a spring 5 acting upon cathode 1, a wire 4 so associated with the cathode as normally to oppose its displacement, means for passing a current through the wire to vary its length and hence the position of the cathode, and straps 6 to guide and position the movable cathode. In Fig. 2, the cathode bears against washer 3 which is moved by the expansion of wire 4. When the heating current is cut off from wire 4 the washer is withdrawn, but the cathode remains in its new position, held by the non-elastic straps 6. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), the cathode is clamped to the washer 3 so that it moves back when the wire 4 contracts and continuous adjustment is possible. The wire 4 may be coated with an appropriate substance enabling it to serve as a getter.

Abstract: 647,152. Gramophone pick-ups ; microphones. RADIO CORPORATION OF AMERICA. Oct. 24, 1947, No. 28496. Convention date, Oct. 31, 1946. Drawings to Specification. [Class 40 (iv)] [Also in Group XL (a)] In a transducer of the type comprising a thermionic valve in which one electrode is movable with respect to the other (or others) under the control of mechanical forces applied thereto so as to produce corresponding variations of an electrical current, the movable electrode is tapered in shape. If the valve is a diode the movable electrode is the anode, whereas in the case of a triode or other multielectrode valve the movable electrode is the grid. The movable electrode which is mounted on a metal diaphragm forming part of the wall of the evacuated envelope of the valve may be a wedge-shaped, pyramidal or preferably a conical bar of metal, and has an extension passing through the diaphragm to the exterior of the envelope. In the embodiments described, viz. pick-ups and microphones, mechanical vibrations are applied to the end of this extension by means of a coupling from a stylus or from an acoustically-operated diaphragm respectively. The Specification contains a mathematical analysis of the considerations affecting efficiency.
