Abstract:
The disclosure relates to the treatment of primary and metastatic cancer using radiation. Specifically, the disclosure relates to methods providing for the selective accretion of cytoprotective agent in tissues and/or organs, sensitive to radiation that are adjacent to malignant tumors prior to radiation of the tumors at a dose that otherwise would be toxic to the tissues and/or organs, but are necessary to achieve ablative outcome on the tumors.
Abstract:
Gas monitoring network and deployment systems and methods are described for detecting gas leaks (e.g., natural gas leaks) from gas infrastructures (e.g., buried natural gas) within residential, commercial, rural, and industrial areas. A method of deployment involves placing detector systems indoor and outdoor environments in distinct patterns, providing early warning or long-term monitoring of gas leaks via data communication technologies.
Abstract:
Methods for treating bodies of water with encapsulated corrosive fluids are described. Corrosive fluids may include, for example, hydrochloric acid or other acids used in treating the bodies of water. The encapsulated corrosive fluids may also be used in for treatments in oil and/or gas wells.
Abstract:
Amorphous SiOx (SiO2), SiONx, silicon nitride (Si3N4), surface treatments are provided, on both metal (titanium) and non-metal surfaces. Amorphous silicon-film surface treatments are shown to enhance osteoblast and osteoblast progenitor cell bioactivity, including biomineral formation and osteogenic gene panel expression, as well as enhanced surface hydroxyapatite (HA) formation. A mineralized tissue interface is provided using the amorphous silicon-based surface treatments in the presence of osteoblasts, and provides improved bone cell generation/repair and improved interface for secure attachment/bonding to bone. Methods for providing PEVCD-based silicon overlays onto surfaces are provided. Methods of increasing antioxidant enzyme (e.g., superoxide dismutase) expression at a treated surface for enhanced healing are also provided. Continuous generation and release of Si4+ ion into an in vitro or in vivo environment in the presence of osteoblasts/osteoblast progenitor cells, methods of employing same for enhancing the rate of bone healing/bone regeneration, is also described.
Abstract:
The subject invention pertains to a modified MC1R peptide ligand comprising a peptide that is a melanocortin 1 receptor (MC1R) ligand and a functionality or linker, such as a click functionality, for conjugation to a surface or agent. The modified MC1R peptide ligand can be coupled, e.g., via a click reaction with a complementary click functionality attached, to a moiety to form an MC1R-targeted agent. Drugs, contrast agents, polymers, particles, micelles, surfaces of larger structures, or other moieties can be targeted to the MC1R. The subject invention also pertains to a MC1R peptide ligand-micelle complex comprising a peptide that is a melanocortin 1 receptor ligand connected via a click reaction product to a micelle. The micelle is stable in vivo and can target melanoma tumor cells by association of the peptide ligand with the MC1R or the tumor and selectively provide a detectable and/or therapeutic agent (such as an imageable contrast agent and/or anti-cancer agent) selectively to the tumor cell.
Abstract:
The present invention relates to compounds and methods which may be useful as inhibitors of HIF pathway activity for the treatment or prevention of cancer and other hypoxia-mediated diseases.
Abstract:
The present invention provides a method for depositing powder particles on a substrate. The method comprises forming a planar plasma armature, accelerating the plasma armature, accelerating a column of gas with the plasma armature; and accelerating the powder particles with the column of gas. The present invention provides for a railgun, comprising first and second conducting rails, and first and second insulating rails. The insulating and conducting rails form a bore of the railgun. The first and second conducting rails are separated by the insulating rails. At least one of the rails has a port in the wall thereof, the port is adapted to introducing powder particles into the bore.
Abstract:
A method and system for generating a voxel-based quadratic penalty model for automatic intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) treatment planning are disclosed herein. A computing system generates an initial assignment of threshold values to a penalty function for IMRT treatment planning. The computing system receives an update to a dose value associated with the IMRT treatment planning. The computing system dynamically updates the threshold values based on the updated dose value. The computing system continues to iterate the threshold values based on further updated dose values.

Abstract:
Systems and methods for assessing physical properties of a geological formation are disclosed. The systems and methods may use electrodes that include two conductive portions separated by an isolation gap positioned along a casing in a wellbore in the formation. The electrodes may be sequentially energized to provide excitation stimulus into the formation while the remaining, non-energized electrodes may substantially simultaneously receive excitation responses to the excitation stimulus from the formation. The excitation responses may be assessed to determine one or more physical properties of fractures in the formation.
