Abstract: Prior battery-powered electric locomotives have used multiple diesel engines to charge the batteries and have not been commercially accepted. The present invention provides a yard switcher which combines battery storage with a gas microturbine generator to provide an effective fuel-efficient and environmentally friendly locomotive.

Abstract: In one embodiment, a multi-engine locomotive includes at least one converter to convert mechanical energy outputted by the engines to Direct Current (DC) electrical energy, a traction motor, and a DC bus connected to the engines, converter, and traction motor. The engines are configured to provide a power-per-length and/or power density that is greater than the power-per-length and/or power density of a single-engine locomotive having a power rating approximately the same as the cumulative power rating of the engines in the multi-engine locomotive.

Abstract: A system and method of dynamically equalizing battery voltages with low inherent power losses in a string of series connected electrochemical batteries is disclosed. The method includes steps of charging/discharging a group of batteries using magnetic storage in a transformer with bipolar magnetic excursion, individually isolated circuits and pulsed energy transfer. A method of exchanging current between batteries using direct current transfer between them and limiting inductance is also disclosed. Using this method, battery voltage may be measured from an isolated circuit, thus enabling information transfer to a central monitoring system. The method also has the benefit of providing an estimation of battery internal resistance from isolated circuits in the series of batteries.

Abstract: The present invention is directed to applying various control options for selecting the number of operating power sources for a multi-power source ve hicle comprised of a number of prime power sources and, optionally including energy storage systems. The invention is applicable to large vehicles such as locomotives, mining trucks, tugboats and large cranes. The present invent ion is directed specifically at providing selectable operating modes for dif ferent locomotive speed ranges and work loads. The invention is based on a c ommon DC bus electrical architecture so that prime power sources need not be synchronized. The invention includes multiple- engine locomotives in which the engine systems may be electrically connected in parallel or in series or in combinations of parallel and series to a DC bus.

Abstract: The present invention is directed to the design of a load-lifting apparat us comprising one or more prime power sources, one or more energy storage sy stems and a means of regenerative braking. Regenerative energy is recovered when the load-lifting apparatus lowers its load. The elements of the prime p ower sources, energy storage devices and electrical components may be distri buted to provide stability for the load-lifting apparatus. The general power architecture and energy recovery method can be applied to cranes, rubber-ti red gantry cranes, overhead cranes, mobile cranes, ship-to-shore cranes, con tainer cranes, rail-mounted gantry cranes, straddle carrier cranes and eleva tors. In such an architecture, the energy storage system helps alleviate the power rating requirement of the prime power source with respect to the peak power requirement for lifting a load.
