Abstract: A process is disclosed for preparing an aqueous polymer dispersion. An aqueous dispersion of a polymer that contains at least one chemically bound, incorporated monomer containing at least one ethylenically unsaturated group, is prepared in a manner known per se, so that the aqueous polymer dispersion contains in total more than 0 but less than or 1 % by weight of free, i.e. non chemically bound monomers having an ethylenically unsaturated double bond, in relation to the polymer content of the aqueous polymer dispersion. This residual monomer content is then reduced with a radical redox initiator system containing at least one oxidising agent and at least one reducing agent. The redox initiator system contains as reducing agent a reducing agent that is present in an aqueous solution in at least two mutually balanced tautomer forms, for example the aminoiminomethanosulfinic acid and/or its salts.

Abstract: An aqueous polymer dispersion obtained by first polymerising, in a first polymerisation step by the free-radical, aqueous emulsion polymerisation method, a monomer composition 1 and subsequently, in a polymerisation step 2, a monomer composition 2 in the presence of the product mixture from polymerisation step 1, where one of the two monomer compositions essentially comprises hard monomers and the other monomer composition essentially comprises soft monomers, and where, in addition to the monomer compositions 1 and 2, nitrogen-containing adhesion monomers are copolymerised, of which at least 20 mol % of the total amount of the adhesion monomers are copolymerised in polymerisation step 1.
