Abstract: The fastness properties of dyed cellulosic materials are improved by impregnating the materials with an aqueous liquor containing at least 1% by weight of a salt or quaternary ammonium compound of a polymer or copolymer of a vinylimidazole at a temperature of 70-90 DEG C. and then drying the material. The drying process may be at room or elevated temperature and may be effected by steaming which may be followed by a drying process if drying is not complete. The Examples provide after-treatments of materials dyed with direct and reactive dyes processes in which in addition to the aforesaid polymer or copolymer a compound containing at least 2 groups H2C= CU-CO- is used in alkaline conditions.

Abstract: Metal-free or metalliferous phthalocyanine dyes of the formula in which Pc is a phthalocyanine radical, R1 is H or an aliphatic radical, R2 is an aliphatic, araliphatic, aromatic or cycloaliphatic radical and in which R1 and R2 are free of substituents which react with the OH-groups of cellulose, Y is an anion and m is an integer 1-6, are obtained by reaction of a compound with an amine and, if desired, by conversion of the reaction product into a salt of an acid other than hydrohalic. Suitable metals to be contained in the phthalocyanine residue are Cu, Co, Ni or Fe. The term "phthalocyanine residue" includes those residues substituted by halogen or aryl attached direct or via bridge members as well as azaphthalocyanines and their phenyl derivatives. A number of suitable amines are specified, some of which have one or more of the following groups in their groups R1 and R2: hydroxy, methoxy, ethoxy, cyano and mercapto groups. Examples are given.ALSO:Textile materials of natural or regenerated cellulose are dyed and/or printed with an acid liquor or paste containing a water-soluble phthalocyamine dye of the formula wherein R1 is H or an aliphatic radical, R2 is an aliphatic, araliphatic, aromatic or cycloaliphati radical said radicals R1 and R2 being free from substituents which react with cellulose under acid conditions, Y is an anion and m is an integer between 1 and 6. The above dyes may be derived from metal free or Cu, Co, Ni or Fecontaining phthalocyanine halomethyl compounds which are reacted with monoamines, especially secondary amines having a total of 3-12 C atoms. The anions may be radicals or inorganic or organic acids or acid salts of polybasic acids. The dye liquors and partes preferably have a pH of 3-4 for which purpose acids may be added and may contain neutral salts and the usual auxiliaries. Dyeing may be accomplished by known methods, e.g. the exhaust process or the pad-steam, pad-hot air or pad-batch method. Printing may be carried out using an emulsion printing paste. Examples of dyeing and printing cotton and spun rayon are given.

Abstract: 1 - (4-chloromethylbenzoylamino)-8-naphthol-3:6-disulphonic acid and 1-(4-chloromethylbenzoylamino) - 4 - aminobenzene-3-sulphonic acid are prepared by reacting 1-amino-8-naphthol-3:6-disulphonic acid or 1:4-diaminobenzene-3-sulphonic acid with 4-chloromethylbenzoyl chloride.ALSO:The invention comprises azo dyes of formula wherein A is the residue of a diazo component of the benzene, naphthalene, phenylazobenzene and phenylazonaphthalene series, B is the residue of a coupling component of the benzene, naphthalene, 1-arylpyrazole and phenylazonaphthalene series, Y is a -CO- or -SO2- group and X is a chlorine or bromine atom. They are prepared by reacting an aminoazo dye of formula:- with a halomethyl-benzenesulphonyl- or benzoyl-halide or by diazotisation and coupling using appropriate components. The dyes may be used to dye and print wool, silk, synthetic polyamides and cellulose fibres, particularly cotton, in a variety of shades, the dyeing being fixed by treatment with an acid-binding agent. The dyes may also be prepared on the fibre by diazotisation and coupling. In examples: (1) the dye 1-(4-chloromethylbenzoylamino)- 4-aminobenzene-3-sulphonic acid --> 1-amino-8-naphthol-3:6-disulphonic acid is prepared; (2) the dye 1-acetylamino-4-aminobenzene-3-sulphonic acid --> 1-naphthol-4-sulphonic acid is prepared, hydrolysed with hydrochloric acid and the resultant aminoazo dye condensed with 4-chloromethyl-benzoyl chloride; (3) an aqueous solution containing sodium hydroxide and 1-(4- chloromethylbenzoylamino)- 8- naphthol-3:6-disulphonic acid is applied to cotton fabric which is then dried and heated to the coupling component and the treated fabric padded with a diazo solution of sulphanilic acid to give a violet dyeing. Many further examples are specified.
