    Abstract: Cationically surface-modified hydrophilic crosslinked polymer nanoparticles are claimed, as is also stain-release treatment of textile or non-textile surfaces using aqueous dispersions of the particles. Independent claims are included for: (1) cationically-modified hydrophilic crosslinked polymer nanoparticles of size 10 nm to 2 microns which are surface-coated with cationic polymers, polyvalent metal ions or cationic surfactants, the crosslinked polymer comprising (by wt.): (a) carboxyl group-containing ethylenically-unsaturated monomers or salts (60-99.9%); (b) water-insoluble mono- ethylenically-unsaturated monomers (0-40%); (c) multi-ethylenically-unsaturated monomer (0.01-30%); (d) sulfonic- and/or phosphonic-acid-containing monomers (0-25%); and (e) water-soluble nonionic monomers (0-30%); (2) aqueous dispersions of such particles, the dispersions being stabilized with anionic, nonionic and/or betaine-type surfactants and/or protective colloids; and (3) stain-releasing treatment of textile or non-textile surfaces using the dispersions.

    Abstract: The invention relates to a treatment method, which promotes the removal of dirt, for the surfaces of textiles and non-textiles. According to said metho d, cationically modified, hydrophilic nanoparticles, based on cross-linked polymers, are applied from an aqueous dispersion to the surface of the materials. Said cross-linked polymers consist of (a) between 60 and 99.99 wt . % of one or more ethylenically unsaturated monomers containing carboxyl groups, or the salts thereof, (b) between 0 and 40 wt. % of one or more wate r- insoluble, monoethylenically unsaturated monomers, (c) between 0.01 and 30 w t. % of one or more ethylenically polyunsaturated monomers, (d) between 0 and 2 5 wt. % of one or more monomers containing sulphonic acid and/or phosphonic acid, or the salts thereof, (e) between 0 and 30 wt. % of one or more water- soluble, non-ionic monomers. The dispersion of the hydrophilic nanoparticles can be stabilised with anionic, non-anionic and/or betainic emulsifiers and/ or protective colloids. The hydrophilic nanoparticles have a particle size of between 10 and 2 .mu.m and are modified cationically by covering their surfa ce with one or more cationic polymers, one or more polyvalent metallic ions and/or one or more cationic surfactants.
