Abstract: Textile materials are dyed and/or printed by beating them, if necessary at elevated temperature, in the presence of an alkaline reacting agent with at least one azo dye or precursor therefor which contains at least one -NH- group in heterocyclic combination and with at least one uncoloured polyfunctional compound of the formula wherein at least two A's are a X-CH2CH2-CO-group in which X is the radical of a 2 DEG amine attached via N and the third A is H2C=CH-CO-or Z+-O3S-CH2CH2-CO- where Z is a cation and, when an azo dye precursor has been used, forming the finished dye in the conventional way. The process is especially suitable to textile materials of natural and regenerated cellulose but may also be applied to materials of cellulose acetate, acrylonitrile polymers and copolymers, polyesters, polyamides, wool and silk. A number of inorganic and organic alkaline agents are specified. Many suitable azo dyes, diazo and coupling components are specified. Pre-metallised azo dyes of the specified type may also be used or metallisation may be carried out subsequently on the fibre. The polyfunctional compound is preferably of the formula where the radicals R1 to R4 may be ethyl or methyl radicals. The dye, polyfunctional compound and alkali may be applied simultaneously from a dyebath or print paste which may also contain dispersing agents and/or protectuve colloids and/or printing auxiliaries. Fixation may be achieved at 15-30 DEG C. but preferably by steaming or dry heating at 30-200 DEG C. The polyfunctional compound may be used as a solution in a water-miscible solvent, e.g. dimethylformamide (others specified). Examples of dyeing and printing cellulose fabrics are given.
