Abstract: A process for the heterogeneous catalyzed gas phase partial oxidation of a precursor compound of (meth)acrylic acid to (meth)acrolein and/or meth(acrylic acid) using a mixed oxide catalyst formed into a geometrically shaped article of specific geometric characteristics. A process for the heterogeneous catalyzed gas phase partial oxidation of a precursor compound of (meth)acrylic acid to (meth)acrolein and/or meth(acrylic acid) in which a reaction mixture comprising the precursor compound, molecular oxygen and optionally an inert gas is fed at elevated temperature through a fixed catalyst bed containing a mixed oxide catalyst formed into a geometrically shaped article formed from a base shape that is processed to have at least one cavity such that the ratio of the volume of the geometric shape VK to the volume of the geometric base shape VG is less than or equal to 0.63 and the ratio of the outer surface of the geometric shape (OK) to its volume is at least 22 cm .

Abstract: Acrolein and acrylic acid are produced from propane and propene by absorption/desorption of propane and propene from a gas mixture followed by oxidation, in which no heterogeneously catalyzed dehydrogenation of propane occurs between the desorption and oxidation stages without addition of oxygen. Acrolein and acrylic acid are produced from propane and propene by: (a) separation of propane and propene from a gas mixture (A) by absorption in an absorption medium; (b) separation of propane and propene from the absorbent to give a mixture (B) containing propane and propene; and (c) using mixture (B) for oxidation to the required product(s). In this process, no catalytic dehydrogenation of propane without the addition of oxygen is carried out between stages (b) and (c).

An independent claim is included for an apparatus comprising two oxidation reactor systems which are charged with catalysts that are suitable for the preparation of (I) by heterogeneously catalyzed partial oxidation of an organic precursor compound and at whose outlet is disposed in each case a line for the removal of the product gas stream comprising (I) from the particular oxidation reactor system, which lines are combined with increasing distance from the two oxidation reactor systems to give a product gas line which leads to an apparatus in which the product gas stream can be condensed partly or fully, where the catalyst charge of one of the two oxidation reactor systems comprises at least one portion of catalyst over which more target product has already been generated than over the portions of catalyst of the catalyst charge of the other oxidation reactor system.

The total content of 4C-hydrocarbons of gas mixture 2 is at most 3 vol.%.
