Abstract: Manufacture of carboxamides by the addition of water to nitriles in the presence of a copper-containing and magnesium silicate-containing catalyst which has been treated with a reducing gas. The carboxamides obtained by the process of the invention are valuable starting materials for the manufacture of solvents, flocculating agents, crosslinking agents, pesticides, plant protectants, textile auxiliaries such as levelling agents, waterproofing agents, foam stabilizers and detergents.

Abstract: 1303163 Aerating liquids BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA-FABRIK AG 7 May 1970 [8 May 1969] 22051/70 Heading B1C Liquid is aerated by means of an ejector which dips into the liquid. The ejector has a central tube 3 through which liquid flows, e.g. from a pump, and induces a flow of air through a surrounding tube 4. The air and liquid pass through a mixing tube 5 completely immersed in the liquid, inducing through the tube 5 the circulation of the liquid in the container. The liquid may be a lake or river, or be in a container 1 as shown. The process may be used to speed up fermentations, or to aerate sewage. The liquid flows through the tube 3 at between 5 and 100 m/sec., the diameter of the mixing tube 5 is 2-20 times the diameter of the tube 3, and the length of the mixing tube 5 is 2-30 times the diameter of the mixing tube.

Abstract: 1,151,574. Cycloalkanols and cycloalkanones. BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA FABRIK A.G. 16 Sept., 1966 [17 Sept., 1965], No. 41468/66. Heading C2C. A mixture of a cycloalkanol and a cyclealkanone is obtained from a cycloalkane having 5-12 ring atoms by contacting the cycloalkane with molecular oxygen at a temperature of about 80-200‹ C., a pressure to maintain the reaction mixture in the liquid phase and in the presence of a cycloalkane oxidation catalyst and a minor amount of an olefinically unsaturated compound containing 3-20 carbon atoms which can be epoxidized under the reaction conditions. Suitable cycloalkane oxidation catalysts are, for example, the salts of vanadium, chromium, manganese, molybdenum, iron, cobalt or nickel with lauric acid, oleic acid, palmitic acid, stearic acid and naphthenic acids or the acetylacetonates, acetonylacetonates or carbonyls of these metals. Suitable olefinically unsaturated compounds are unsaturated hydrocarbons or those containing halogen, hydroxyl, carboxyl, ester or ether substituents. Examples are given of the oxidation of cyclohexane and cyclooctane.

Abstract: 1,126,200. Extracting palladium values. BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA-FABRIK A.G. 24 Dec., 1965 [28 Dec., 1964], No. 54779/65. Heading C1A. Palladium values are extracted from an aqueous solution containing them by a method of liquid/liquid extraction using an amine which contains at least six carbon atoms per nitrogen atom, or solution of such amine in an organic solvent, separating the amine phase and reextracting the Pd values with an aqueous acid solution, the amount and/or the concentration of the aqueous acid being greater than in the original solution so that the activity of PO 2+ in said aqueous acid is less than in the original solution. The inert solvent for the amine preferably has little or no miscibility with water. The original aqueous solution may be acid and may have been obtained in the process for the production of glyoxal by oxidizing ethylene in which Pd is a catalyst. Suitable aqueous acids for the re-extraction are given as HC1, H 2 SO 4 , H 3 PO 4 and HNO 3 , but palladium iodide, bromide, chloride, sulphate and nitrate are recorded as being obtained by the process, although nitric acid is the preferred acid and the obtaining of solutions of Pd in nitric acid is exemplified. Lists of suitable amines and inert solvents are given in the Specification.
