Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To supply an ink tank with ink through a simple arrangement by stopping suction supply of ink automatically utilizing the function of a gas permeation member. SOLUTION: A negative pressure is brought about in a storage ink tank 20 when it is evacuated by means of a suction pump. Consequently, ink in a supplementary ink tank sucked into the interior 41 of the tank 20 permeates an ink absorber 41a comprising a mass of small interconnecting cells and the liquid level 41b of ink ascends as permeation progresses. Since ascending rate of the liquid level 41b of ink depends on the suction force of the suction pump, an appropriate rate is set depending on the rotational amount of a cam gear. When the liquid level 41b of ink reaches a gas permeation member 48, ink supply is stopped automatically because the gas permeation member 48 does not pass liquid, e.g. ink. The gas permeation member 48 is a thin sheet made of a porous resin material, e.g. tetrafluoroethylene resin.

SOLUTION: A sub-tank 501 mountable removably on a carriage moving along guide shafts 503A, 503B is provided, at a section for containing each color of ink, with an ink intake opening, a suction opening, openings 501A-C communicating with the atmosphere, and an ink supply opening. A seal member 532 on the forward end side of an arm member 531 supported by a supporting member 533 while being urged by a spring 534 is connected to a suction pump 513 through a suction pipe 512 to form a sealing member 532B for closing openings 532A, 501B, 501C which can be interconnected to a suction opening 501B. Further, a member 505 not permeating ink but permeating gas is provided at the opening 532A and when a recording head 502 is at a home position, cap parts 524, 525 ascend to cover a nozzle part 502A and sealing member 523, 532 close openings 501A, 501B.
