    Abstract: In the process, a mixture of 99 to 5 mol % of at least one alkanol ethoxylate and 1 to 95 mol % of at least one carboxamide ethoxylate are reacted in the liquid state at 20 to 120 DEG C with 0.95 to 1 mol of chlorosulphonic acid or sulphur trioxide per 1 mol of -CH2CH2OH groups contained in the ethoxylates, and the reaction product is subsequently neutralised with an aqueous solution or suspension of an alkali metal, alkaline earth metal or ammonium hydroxide. This results in surfactant mixtures which are dissolved in water, contain ether sulphate and have a low content of 1,4-dioxane and which can be employed either directly or after low-cost removal of the small amounts of residual 1,4-dioxane as body care agents, dishwashing agents or detergents.
