Abstract: An electron multiplier comprises first and second perforate laminar electrodes (370, 380). An electrically non-conductive layer (310), e.g. of aluminium oxide, separates the electrodes. The layer defines channels (330) between perforations of the first electrode and perforations of the second electrode. The channels are lined with an electrically resistive layer (350), e.g. tin oxide, and an electron emissive layer (360), e.g. comprising lead, overlying the electrically resistive layer. The electron multiplier is especially useful for amplifying electron beam current in a field emission display, the channels (330) being aligned with an array of electron emissive tips.

Abstract: An electron source comprises a cathode means, and an extractor grid used to extract electrons from the cathode. The extractor grid is formed by etching a plurality of apertures in the material. A plurality of spacing members for spacing the extractor grid at a constant, predetermined spacing from the cathode are used. Each of the spacing members is formed by etching around a substantial portion of the periphery of the aperture and folding a remaining portion of the periphery of the aperture at substantially a right angle to the planar material.

Abstract: A display device comprises field emission cathode means for emitting electrons. A plurality of electron beams are formed from the field emission cathode means. A screen, which has a phosphor coating facing the cathode receives the plurality of electron beams. The phosphor coating comprises a plurality of pixels each corresponding to a different one of said plurality of electron beams. A grid electrode means is disposed between the cathode means and the screen for controlling the flow of electrons from the cathode means. The field emission cathode means comprises extractor grid means, having a plurality of separately addressable portions associated with each of said plurality of pixels. A gamma transfer function between input data value and beam current is provided in order to emulate a conventional CRT. This can be achieved by use of a lookup table.

Abstract: A virtual remote cathode has the position of a space charge cloud associated with it fixed by the geometry of a fixed insulating plate (902). The plate (902) can be made to accurate dimensions and hence the virtual remote cathode to control grid (502) distance can be accurately controlled and will not change as a result of any mechanical, electrical or physical changes in the construction. The fixed insulating plate (902) is located on a surface of the control grid (502) facing the cathode (510).
