    Abstract: A method of bonding faceplates (20) to VDU screens is provided in which an adhesive material is dispensed (80) onto a surface of either the faceplate or the VDU (40), the faceplate and the VDU are brought together (90) to force the adhesive material outwards to fill the gap between the surfaces, and the adhesive material layer (41) which is formed is then cured. In a first curing step (100), curing is carried out around the edges of the faceplate to form a seal around the edges. This first step may be carried out in a dedicated positioning tool. A later curing step (120) ensures that all of the adhesive material layer is eventually cured. Positioning (90) in the dedicated tool may use specific reference points on the faceplate and the VDU rather than relying on physical spacers, and may be carried out under servo control of a system for detecting the onset of undesirable gas entrapment conditions within the adhesive layer. The invention is particularly useful for automated or semi-automated bonding of touch-plates to screens to form touch-input displays, with the avoidance of spacers and with the selective, two-stage curing enabling minimising of time in the positioning tool.

    Abstract: An electron multiplier comprises first and second perforate laminar electrodes (370, 380). An electrically non-conductive layer (310), e.g. of aluminium oxide, separates the electrodes. The layer defines channels (330) between perforations of the first electrode and perforations of the second electrode. The channels are lined with an electrically resistive layer (350), e.g. tin oxide, and an electron emissive layer (360), e.g. comprising lead, overlying the electrically resistive layer. The electron multiplier is especially useful for amplifying electron beam current in a field emission display, the channels (330) being aligned with an array of electron emissive tips.

    Abstract: An electro-optic display cell has an arrangement of display electrodes in contact with a liquid within a sealed enclosure. The enclosure comprises an impervious transparent cover and a rigid structural wall member. A seal between the cover and wall member and an elastomeric plug extending between the exterior and interior complete the enclosure. The cell is filled by injecting the liquid into the presealed enclosure by perforating the plug with hollow needles also employed to remove entrapped gas. Upon withdrawal of the needles the perforations collapse to self-seal the enclosure but for added integrity the plug is also mechanically clamped. Conveniently, the seal and plug can be formed as an integral elastomeric moulding around a frame member forming the side wall of the enclosure and the frame member clamped between the cover and a separate base.

    Abstract: ELECTROCHROMIC DISPLAY DEVICE In an electrochromic display device, it is desirable that the counter electrode is maintained at a constant potential to enable reference electrodes to be dispensed with. This is achieved, in the preferred embodiment, by a secondary redox system which senses the potential of the counter electrode by means of a conductor connecting the counter electrode and the electrode of the secondary system. When the potential of the counter electrode falls below a given value, the secondary system, which is connected to the display electrolyte through an ion exchange membrane, charges the counter electrode with electrochromic material. The counter electrode may be a grid.

    Abstract: A display device such as a magnetic matrix addressed display device having a cathode means and grid electrode means comprising an orthogonal array of parallel row conductors and parallel column conductors 40a, includes means for selectively applying cut-off and gain correction information 516 to the row conductors the column conductors. The cut-off and gain correction information may be applied so as to affect all of the display area equally and correct for warm up drift, or it may be applied so as to correct for the effect of a discrete number of hot cathode filaments being used or it may be applied on a pixel by pixel basis. The correction information may vary with time or with the temperature sensed by a detector 514.
