Abstract: A display device comprises a cathode and a permanent magnet. A two dimensional array of rows and columns of channels extends between opposite poles of the magnet for receiving electrons from the cathode. A screen has a plurality of phosphor pixels each corresponding to a different channel and each comprising a plurality of sub-pixels facing the side of the magnet remote from the cathode. Grid electrode means is disposed between the cathode means and the magnet. A plurality of pairs of anodes are disposed between the magnet and the screen and extending parallel to the columns of channels. Each pair corresponds to a different column of channels and each pair has first and second anodes extending along opposite sides of the corresponding column of channels. Address means supplies control signals to the grid electrode means to selectively control flow of electrons from the cathode through each channel to the corresponding pixel. An anode drive circuit supplies anode drive signals to the first and second anodes respectively. The anode drive circuit comprises bias means for generating an acceleration component of each anode drive signal for accelerating electrons through the channels, deflection means for generating a deflection component of each anode drive signal for deflecting electrons emerging from each channel towards different sub-pixels of the corresponding pixel, and correction means for varying the deflection component to align the deflected electron beams with the corresponding sub-pixels.

Abstract: A computer system includes a communication means for connection to a remote computer and a position determination system for determining the physical position of the computer system. The communications means receives a request from the remote computer for the computer system to provide the physical position of the computer to the remote computer system via the communications means. The request from the remote computer may originate because the computer system has been stolen or mislaid by a user or it may originate because the computer system has inadvertently been allocated the same network identifier as another computer and the physical location of the computer system needs to be known so that the network identifier can be changed.

Abstract: A display device such as a magnetic matrix addressed display device having a cathode means and grid electrode means comprising an orthogonal array of parallel row conductors and parallel column conductors 40a, includes means for selectively applying cut-off and gain correction information 516 to the row conductors the column conductors. The cut-off and gain correction information may be applied so as to affect all of the display area equally and correct for warm up drift, or it may be applied so as to correct for the effect of a discrete number of hot cathode filaments being used or it may be applied on a pixel by pixel basis. The correction information may vary with time or with the temperature sensed by a detector 514.

Abstract: A vacuum electron device 10, e.g. a diode, triode, synchrotron, magnetron, cyclotron, CRT or electron beam lithography apparatus, is provided with a sensor electrode 40 to monitor electron beam current. The sensor may be a plate, e.g. of tapering shape, which intercepts part of the beam to monitor the current directly, or may be an element which responds indirectly to a magnetic field induced by the beam current. A signal representing the sensed current can be used in a feedback circuit 110,120,130 to adjust the potential on cathode 20 and/or the grid 70 to stabilise the beam current. The cathode may be a thermionic cathode, a photocathode, a field emission cathode or a metalinsulator-metal cathode, the feedback circuit compensating for the effects of cathode ageing. A magnetic matrix display device embodying the invention is described in which the plane cathode is divided into a plurality of selectively actuable strips.

Abstract: An electron source comprises cathode means 20 and a permanent magnet 60 perforated by a plurality of channels 70 extending between opposite poles thereof. The magnet generates, in each channel, a magnetic field which forms electrons received from the cathode means into an electron beam for guidance towards a target e.g. phosphors 80. Grid electrode means 40 is disposed between the cathode means and the magnet for controlling flow of electrons from the cathode means into each channel. A magnetic field null region 61 adjacent the entrance to each channel is positioned at a location remote from the grid electrode means. Because the null region is positioned remotely from the grid electrodes, flow of electrons into the channels can be improved without increasing electrode drive voltages.

Abstract: An electron source, e.g. for a display or printer, comprises a cathode 20 and a permanent magnet structure 60 having a plurality of channels 70 extending between its poles, each channel forming an electron beam from electrons emitted by the cathode, preferably under control of a grid 40. When used in a display, the electron beams excite phosphors 80 defining pixels, each beam being steered by anodes 50 to address sub-pixels, e.g. in the sequence B,R,G,R... The cathode may be formed as an array of field emitters, plasma or hot area cathodes or a photocathode. A technique for forming the magnet is also disclosed, wherein a layer of powder comprising a ferrite and glass is placed in a mould, and a die having pins to form the channels is moved relative to the mould to compress the powder, the perforated block so formed being then heated and magnetised.
