Abstract: The present invention proposes an infrastructure to enable seamless mobility for wireless metropolitan area networks (WMANs) and to provide for management of spectrum and network resources. An WMAN reference model is introduced where the radio resource management (RRM) and handover (HO) sublayer is introduced into the protocol stack. The WMAN management plane is responsible for the RRM and HO management. Several physical and logical network architecture options for WMAN management are proposed.

The methods further include transmitting authentication, authorization, and accounting, AAA, information related to the at least one UE to the core network using a tunnel.

Abstract: The base station includes a communication circuit for enabling simultaneous communications between a number of ports and a number of the subscriber stations over a given communication channel having multiple sequentially repetitive time slots. An exchange is included to connect the communication circuit to the external communication network ports. A remote-connection process is coupled to the communication circuit by the exchange and by a base-station control channel occupying a selected one of the time slots for monitoring the status of the other time slots. The connection processor causes the communication circuit and the exchange to complete a connection between a given communication network port and a given subscriber station over a time slot assigned in response to the monitored status in accordance with a predetermined assignment routine.

Abstract: Apparatus and method for providing an automatic handoff process of a user equipment (UE) from either a wireless local area network (WLAN) to a universal mobile telecommunications system (UMTS) or from a UMTS to a WLAN. Handoffs may be initiated by the UE, based upon user preference, signal quality, comparison of location coordinates of the UE and the system to be switched to or signal quality. The available channels of one system may be broadcast to the UE by the other system or the UE may monitor channels of the system to be switched to and lock on to one. The handoff may also be initiated by the UMTS, the selection being power-based.

Abstract: Base station in communication with telephone lines for the simultaneous wireless transmission of information signals to a number of subscriber stations between the base station and each of the number of subscriber stations. The base station comprises a first interface which is connected via trunk lines to the telephone lines; signal compression means which are connected to the aforementioned first interface by means of a number of trunk lines for the simultaneous compression of different digital signal patterns in order to provide different compressed signals and channel-control means which are connected to the signal compression means for the sequential combination of the compressed signals into a single transmission bit stream, each of the respective compressed signals occupying a respective sequential position in the transmission bit stream. Furthermore, transmission and reception means are provided in the base station to establish direct wireless communication between the base station and the number of subscriber stations.
