    Abstract: PURPOSE:To provide a magnetic coating which comprises ferromagnetic fine powder containing iron as a main component, a binder and THF, thus gives a magnetic recording medium excellent in high-frequency output because the magnetic powder disperses stably and uniformly and gives excellent surface properties to the magnetic layer. CONSTITUTION:The objective coating contains (A) a ferromagnetic metal powder which mainly comprises iron having less than 0.13mum average main axis length, less than 160Angstrom crystal size, over 1850 (Oe) coercive force and more than 130(emu/g) saturation magnetization, (B) a binder such as sulfonic acid group- containing polyurethane resin or sulfonic acid group-containing vinyl chloride copolymer and (C) THF. In usual cases, the component B is added to the coating in an amount of 3 to 10 wt.%. The component C is added in an amount of 20 to 40wt.%.As the component A, is used, for example, iron powder or iron alloys with cobalt, nickel or the like.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain a magnetic recording medium having excellent magnetic characteristics and physical characteristics by a method wherein an intermediate layer containing nonmagnetic particles is formed on a substrate and a magnetic layer containing Co-coated iron oxide whose coercive force is not smaller than a specific value and whose average long axis length is not larger than a specific value is formed on the intermediate layer. CONSTITUTION:Coating material mainly composed of nonmagnetic particles and binder is applied to a substrate to form an intermediate layer. As the material of the magnetic layer of a magnetic recording medium, cobalt-coated iron oxide whose coercive force is not smaller than 1300Oe, preferably 1300-2000Oe, is employed. If the coercive force of the cobalt-coated iron oxide is smaller than 1300Oe, a high output can not be obtained. Further, the average long axis length of the cobalt-coated iron oxide is not larger than 0.3mum. Although the shape of the cobalt-coated iron oxide is not limited, a needle-shape is preferable. If the average long axis length of the cobalt-coated iron oxide is larger than 0.3mum, an S/N is degraded. On the other hand, if very fine magnetic powder whose average long axis length is not larger than 0.3mum is employed, the durability of the magnetic recording medium is degraded.

The polyisocyanate formed by coupling an isocyanate group to an aliphat. hydrocarbon is used as a hardener. On the other hand, the ester compd. expressed by formula I is used as the lubricant. CONSTITUTION:The ester compd. expressed by formula I is incorporated into the magnetic layer essentially comprising magnetic powder and a binder. In formula I, R represents an aliphatic hydrocarbon group with a branched chain with 3 - 10 carbons and R' represents a satd. or unsatd. aliphatic hydrocarbon group with 7 - 21 carbons. This ester compd. is produced from a branched alcohol with 3 - 10 carbons and a monobasic fatty acid with 8 - 22 carbons, and more preferably a onobasic fatty acid with 12 - 18 carbons. This gives more preferable lubricating property and the obtd. medium has significantly improved durability in a wide range of environments.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain a high reproduced output and high durability by using pulverous ferromagnetic iron oxide powder having a specific surface area and a binder consisting of a polyurethane resin having SO3M groups. CONSTITUTION:The pulverous ferromagnetic iron oxide powder has /g specific surface area and the binder is the polyurethane resin having >=1 SO3M groups (where M is H, Li, Na or K) for each 1mol. The pulverous ferromagnetic iron oxide powder is enumerated by mixed crystals composed of r-Fe2O3, r-Fe2O3 and Fe3O4 or these magnetic materials deposited or doped with Co, etc. The pulverous ferromagnetic iron oxide powder having the specific surface area larger than 30m /g is relatively highly rugged in magnetic particle surface and is susceptible to damage by the friction with a magnetic head and therefore there is a problem in terms of durability. The successful dispersion of the powder into the urethane resin is not possible and eventually the high reproduced output and high durability are not obtainable. The number average mol. wt. of the polyurethane resin is preferably 5,000-50,000.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain high reproduced output and high durability with short wavelength recording by using ferromagnetic metallic powder having a specific surface area and a binder consisting of a specific polyurethane resin. CONSTITUTION:The ferromagnetic metallic powder used has /g specific surface area and the binder is the polyurethane resin having >=1 SO3M groups (where M is H, Li, Na or K) for each one molecule. The ferromagnetic metallic powder is exemplified by metallic powder such as Fe, Co and Ni or ferromagnetic alloy powder of Fe-Co, Fe-Ni, Co-Ni, Fe-Co-Ni, etc. The ferromagnetic metallic powder having >=40m /g specific surface area is relatively highly rugged in the magnetic particle surface and is susceptible to damage by the wear with a magnetic head and therefore there is a problem in the durability. In addition, the successful dispersion of the powder into the urethane resin is not possible and eventually the high reproduced output and high durability are not obtainable. The number average mol. wt. of the polyurethane resin is preferably 5,000-50,000.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To improve magnetic powder dispersibility, durability and surface smoothness by using a specific polyurethane resin as a binder. CONSTITUTION:The polyurethane resin having at least >=1 respectively among 3 kinds of polar groups; SO3M group, COOM group (M is H, Li, Na or K) and OH group in the molecular chain is used. A magnetic recording medium is produced by coating a magnetic paint for which the polyurethane resin is used as the binder and to which pulverous ferromagnetic powder and additive, etc. are added together with an org. solvent, on a non-magnetic substrate and drying the coating. The ratio of the binder and the pulverous ferromagnetic powder is 10-100pts.wt., more preferably 20-50pts.wt. by 100pts.wt. pulverous ferromagnetic powder. The mechanical strength and wear resistance are not enough if the ratio of the binder is below 10pts.wt. The magnetic powder density in the magnetic layer decreases and the satisfactory performance (reproduced output, etc.) as the magnetic recording medium is not obtainable if the ratio of the binder is increased to 100pts.wt. or above.
