    Abstract: A method characterized by distributing channel coding on either side of a limited capacity communication path (102) by partially channel coding (400) a signal at a first processing point (100) and communicating the partially coded signal over the communication path (102) to a second processing point (105). The partially coded signal is characterized by at least some but not all of the necessary coded bits. The channel coding algorithm is completed at the second processing point (105) using the communicated partially coded signal (401) thereby increasing throughput over the limited capacity path (102) while minimizing added delays.

    Abstract: Audio degradation is minimized in scenarios where tandem coding occurs. One such scenario is in the environment of voice mail service. Characteristics of an audio information signal are determined, and the signal is classified as to whether further coding should be performed and, if so, which rate/type of coding should be performed. Characteristics of the audio signal which are determined are, inter alia, quality characteristics, rate of previous coding, type of previous coding and the source of previous coding of the audio information signal. The source of previous coding determined may further include, inter alia, an analog network, a digital network, a PSTN or a wireless communication system. Based on this information, the voice mail service will either choose not to further code the audio information signal or code the audio information signal with the best coding algorithm available.

    Abstract: An AMPS system facilitates reception and processing of a DS CDMA signal transmitted by a mobile station (125). The AMPS system provides an alternate path for the signal to be received by a DS CDMA receiver (506) system. The DS CDMA receiver system generates a signal compatible with the AMPS system, adjusts the generated signal to be proportional to the DS CDMA signal, and inputs the adjusted signal (510) into the AMPS system. The AMPS system then processes the adjusted signal for purposes of handoff of the mobile station (125) from the DS CDMA system to the AMPS system.

    Abstract: A communication system having a site employing a plurality of communication channels. Each channel is assigned a desired received signal strength threshold. A channel is assigned to a subscriber unit based upon the strength of the signal received at the site and the power control range of the subscriber unit. In an FDMA environment, each separate frequency division channel may be assigned different received signal strength thresholds. In a non-overlapping time interval (TDMA) environment, each separate time division channel may be assigned different received signal strength thresholds. In another embodiment, a combination of FDMA and TDMA environments can be used.

    Abstract: A spread-spectrum noise canceller is provided for cancelling user code noise from a spread-spectrum communication channel.
