Abstract: On y divulgue un procédé pour améliorer et modifier les propriétés cosmétiques des cheveux vivants, caractérisé par le fait que l'on transforme en lanthionine environ 25 à 70 % et de préférence environ 35 à70 % de la cystine qu'ils contiennent, les cheveux n'étant soumis à aucun effort d'extension pendant le traitement. On traite les cheveux en milieu aqueux à l'aide d'une composition ayant un pH compris entre environ 10,5 et 13, en maintenant les cheveux à l'état humide à une température comprise entre environ 25 et 50.degree.C, pendant un temps suffisant pour obtenir le taux de lanthionine désiré, ce temps étant compris entre 10 et 60 minutes environ. Composition pour traiter les cheveux , caractérisée par le fait qu'elle contient en mélange, en milieu aqueux, au moins un hydroxyde alcalin ou alcalino-terreux à un pH compris entre environ 10,5 et 13, et au moins un activateur de lanthionisation choisi dans le groupe que constituent les électrolytes neutres au point de vue oxydoréduction, les réducteurs ayant une action hydrolytique limitée sur les liaisons S-S de la cystine et les composés tensio-actifs cationiques. Les composés tensio-actifs cationiques sont constitués par du bromure de cétyl-triméthylammonium à une concentration allant jusqu'à 3.10-2 mole par litre ou par un hydroxyde d'ammonium quaternaire à une concentration allant jusqu'à 10-1 mole par litre.
