Abstract: A cellular communication system in which a system user and another user communicate with each other by way of information carrying spread spectrum modulated signals transmitted via a cell-site in which system: the system user comprises a transmitter for transmitting information carrying spread spectrum modulated signals to said cell-site, a receiver for receiving information carrying spread spectrum modulated signals from said cell-site and means for measuring signal quality in said information carrying spread spectrum modulated signals received by the system user; the cell-site comprises a transmitter for transmitting information carrying spread spectrum modulated signals to said system user, a receiver for receiving information carrying spread spectrum modulated signals from said system user and adjusting means for adjusting the power of information carrying spread spectrum modulated signals transmitted from the cell-site ; and power control means is provided for controlling the transmission power of the information carrying spread spectrum modulated signals by measuring the signal power in the information carrying spread spectrum modulated signals received by the system user and transmitting data representing the measured power to the cell-site by way of the information carrying spread spectrum modulated signals, the adjusting means being responsive to the data in the information carrying spread spectrum modulated signals from the system user to adjust the power in the information carrying spread spectrum modulated signals transmitted by the cell-site.

Abstract: A closed loop automatic gain control (AGC) circuit with high dynamic range capabilities having an amplifier circuit for receiving an input signal, which is susceptible to variations in signal power, and a control signal. The amplifier circuit is responsive to the control signal for amplifying the input signal at a gain level corresponding to the control signal so as to provide a corresponding output signal. A measurement circuit is coupled to the amplifier means for measuring logarithmic signal power of the amplified input signal and providing a corresponding linear measurement signal. An integration circuit is included for receiving the measurement signal, and a reference signal which corresponds to a desired signal power of the output signal. The integration circuit integrates with respect to time the difference between the measurement signal and the reference signal, and generates the control signal which corresponds to the result of the integration.

Abstract: In a cellular telephone system a system for directing communications between a mobile user and cell-sites as a mobile user changes cell-site service areas. The mobile user includes an apparatus for, while in communication with another system user via one cell-site, determining a transition of the mobile user from the cell-site service area to the service area of another cell-site. The system includes circuitry responsive to the indication for coupling communications between the mobile user and the other system user via the new cell-site while the mobile user also remains in communication with the system user via the first cell-site. The system further includes apparatus responsive to the coupling of the communications between the mobile user and the other system user via the new cell-site for terminating the communications between the mobile user and another system user via cell-site with communications continuing between the mobile user and the system user via the new cell-site.

The setpoint may be adjusted in different manners and/or by different amounts depending on the above-noted factors. The techniques may be employed for forward and/or reverse links in CDMA systems.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for arranging various types of data, and at various rates, into a uniquely structured format for transmission. Data for transmission formatting may be speech data provided by vocoder (14) or different types of secondary traffic. The data organized into frames of a predetermined time duration for transmission by a microprocessor (18). The data frames are organized, depending on the data, to be at one of several data rates. Vocoder data is provided by vocoder (14) at one of several data rates and is organized in the frame according to a predetermined format. Frames may be formatted with a sharing of vocoder data with non-vocoder data to be at a highest frame data rate. Different types of non-vocoder data may be organized so as to also be at the highest frame data rate. Additional control data may be provided within the data frames to support various aspects of the transmission and recovery upon reception.

Abstract: A cell site, comprising: means for modulating configured to format digital data for transmission on a communications channel and to insert at least one timing command into the digital data, the digital data comprising a plurality of bits; means for transmitting coupled to the means for modulating and configured to receive the digital data from the means for modulating, convert the digital data to analog data, and transmit the analog data on the communications channel; and means for receiving configured to receive a signal from at least one remote unit and to determine a timing error of the received signal to be used to generate the timing command in accordance with the timing error, the means for receiving being coupled to the means for modulating and configured to provide the timing command to the means for modulating.

Abstract: In the present invention, the slave base station attains synchronization with the reference base station through messages transmitted from and received by a mobile station either in the soft handoff region between the reference base station and the slave base station or within a range which allows the mobile station to communicate with the slave base station. When the mobile station is not in communication with both the reference base station and the slave base station, then the round trip delay between the mobile station and the reference base station is measured by the reference base station. The reference base station communicates the PN code used by the mobile station over the reverse link to the slave base station. The slave base station acquires the signal from the mobile station and determines when the signal from the mobile station arrives. The slave base station then makes an estimate as to the length of the delay between transmission of a signal from the mobile station to the slave base station. Based upon these measurements and estimates, the slave base station determines the error which is present in the slave base station system time.
