Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of and apparatus for controlling transmission power in a communication system. SOLUTION: At a remote station 6, a reverse link power control bits transmitted by one or more base stations 4a, 4b, 4n to a forward traffic channel 10a are measured. The reverse link 12a, 12b power control bits which are deemed unreliable are omitted from use in the power control loop. The remote station 6 generates a set of forward link power control bits in accordance with the measurements and transmits these bits to all base stations 4a, 4b, 4n in communication with the remote station 6. Each base station 4a, 4b, 4n adjusts its gain of the forward traffic channel 10a in accordance with its measurement of the forward link power control bit. The gains of the forward traffic channels 10a of the base stations 4a, 4b, 4n are corrected periodically so that erroneous reception of the forward link power control bits by the base stations do not accumulate. PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and apparatus for adjusting the time at which a mobile station performs searches for alternative systems, to which a hard hand-off will be conducted between different wireless communication systems. SOLUTION: A mobile station 5 receives a command which instructs the mobile station 5 on when to tune to alternative frequencies, in order to search for indications of the presence of an alternative system. The mobile station 5 tunes to alternative frequencies to perform searches only during predetermined times. In addition, the mobile station 5 coordinates the transmission of reports which indicate the results of searches for alternative systems, such that these reports are transmitted from the mobile station 5, when the mobile station 5 is to be tuned to the starting frequency. PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To coordinate time required by a mobile station to search for an alternative system used for performing hard hand-off. SOLUTION: The mobile station receives a command instructing the mobile station as for tuning at an alternative frequency to search for the display of the presence of an alternative system. A predetermined time is defined with respect to a reference point of time common between a starting base station and the mobile station. The mobile station executes search only during the predetermined time synchronously with the alternative frequency. Further, the mobile station coordinates a transmission report indicating the result of searching for the alternative system so that the report can be transmitted from the mobile station when the mobile station is tuned at the starting frequency. Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and an apparatus for coordinating time duration for searching a substitute system, by which a mobile station performs hard handoff. SOLUTION: As for tuning in a substitute frequency in order to search indication of existence of a substitute system, a mobile station receives an instruction, which directs the mobile station. Predetermined time duration is defined for a reference point of time duration in common for both an origination base station and the mobile station. Then, the mobile station tunes in the substitute frequency and performs search during only the predetermined time. The mobile station coordinates a transmission report, which displays the searched result of the substitute system, in a way that the report may be transmitted from the mobile station when the mobile station tunes in the initiation frequency. PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and apparatus for providing a received signal quality metric which is optimally designed to control the transmission power of a transmitter in a closed loop power control system. SOLUTION: An apparatus generating a power control command in a closed loop power control system in a CDMA communication system comprises: a means for measuring an inband energy value; a means for computing a non-interfering energy value; a means for subtracting the non-interfering energy value from the inband energy value to provide an interference noise value; a means for measuring bit energy of a received signal; and a means for computing a signal-to-noise ratio in accordance with the interference noise value and the bit energy. Abstract:
The transmitted power of a mobile telephone (12) is established by power control bits that are transmitted in a traffic channel from a base station (14A, 14B) and that are demodulated by a rake receiver (22, 24) in the telephone. The rake receiver includes a plurality of demodulators (25a to 25f) that demodulate respective fingers of the traffic channel which may be caused by multipath conditions, with the power control bits from each demodulator being combined with the power control bits of the other demodulators in the rake receiver regardless of whether the demodulators (25a to 25f) are in lock with their respective fingers. The combined power control signal from a rake receiver (22, 24) associated with a first base station (14A, 14B) is then tested against a threshold. If the combined power is at least equal to the threshold, the combined power control signal is sent to a logic combiner (42). If other base stations are communicating with the mobile telephone, the combined power control signal from each of these other base stations is also sent to the logic combiner (42). If any power control signal commands the mobile telephone to decrease its transmitted power, it does so; otherwise, it increases its transmitted power. Alternatively, the power control bits from each demodulator in a rake receiver (22, 24) can be blocked if the finger energy falls below a threshold that depends on the number of fingers from the associated base station.
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for coordinating the time at which a mobile station (5) performs searches for alternative systems to which a hard handoff will occur. In one system which includes the present invention, the mobile station (5) receives a command which instructs the mobile station (5) as to when to tune to alternative frequencies in order to search for indications of the presence of an alternative system. In another system which includes the present invention, predetermined times are defined with respect to a reference point in time that is common to both an origination base station (10) and a mobile station (5). The mobile station (5) tunes to alternative frequencies to perform searches only during these predetermined times. In addition, the mobile station (5) coordinates the transmission of reports which indicate the results of searches for alternative systems such that these reports are only transmitted from the mobile station (5) when the mobile station (5) is tuned to the origination frequency.
