    Abstract: The present specification discloses a covert mobile inspection vehicle with a backscatter X-ray scanning system that has an X-ray source and detectors for obtaining a radiographic image of an object outside the vehicle. The system is configured to also simultaneously detect passive radiation. The systems preferably include at least one sensor for determining a distance from at least one of the detectors to points on the surface of the object being scanned, a processor for processing the obtained radiographic image by using the determined distance of the object to obtain an atomic number of each material contained in the object, and one or more sensors to obtain surveillance data from a predefined area surrounding the vehicle.

    Abstract: The invention provides a switchable photomultiplier switchable between a detecting state and a non-detecting state comprising a cathode upon which incident radiation is arranged to impinge. The photomultiplier also comprises a series of dynodes arranged to amplify a current created at the cathode upon detection of photoradiation. A first dynode of the series is operatively closest to the cathode and is at a first potential and the electrical potential of the cathode is switchable between a second potential, below the first potential, when the photomultiplier is in the detecting state and a third potential, above the second potential, when the photomultiplier is in the non-detecting state. The invention also provides a detection system arranged to detect radiation-emitting material in an object. The system comprises a detector switchable between a detecting state in which the detector is arranged to detect radiation and a non-detecting state it which the detector is arranged to not detect radiation. The system further comprises a controller arranged to control switching of the detector between the states such that the detector is switched to the non-detecting state whilst an external radiation source is irradiating the object.

    Abstract: The invention provides a method, system and detector arrangement for scanning an object moving in a first direction comprising irradiating the object with radiation having a peak energy of at least 900 keV, providing a first detector region having a thickness of at least 2 mm and a second detector region having a thickness of at least 5mm wherein the second detector region is arranged to receive radiation that has passed through the first detector region, and detecting the radiation after it has interacted with or passed through the object in order to provide information relating to the object. Detecting the radiation comprises detecting radiation at the first detector region, receiving radiation that has passed through the first detector region at the second detector region, and detecting radiation at the second detector region. At the first detector region, the second detector region, or both, detecting the radiation comprises capturing a plurality of sets of detection data using different groups of detection elements, each detection element being arranged to provide information relating to a corresponding portion of the object, each set of detection data being captured at a different time such that each group of detection elements is arranged to provide information on the same region of the object. The corresponding portions covered by each group are overlapped in a second direction having a component normal to the first direction.
