Abstract: A tape cassette has one or more manually settable slider elements that are detected to prevent erroneous erasure of information recorded on the cassette. The or each slider (50) slides in a through hole (31) in the cassette case (2, 3) and includes stops (53a, 53b) that limit the travel of the slider element (50) by co-operating with protrusions or shoulders that are formed by the respective half cases (2, 3) making up the cassette case. The slider element (50) also includes a click-stop protrusion (51) that co-operates with a protrusion (32) in the through hole (31) that is formed in only one of the two half-cases (2, 3). The slider element (50) further includes a through slot (55) that permits deformation of the slider element (50) as the click-stop protrusion (51) goes over the protrusion (32) in the through-hole (31), thereby requiring less force to move the element. The stops (53a, 53b) can be formed by two spaced apart protrusions that also permit deformation of the slide element as the click-stop protrusion (51) travels past the protrusion (32) in the through-hole (31).

Even-numbered words and odd-numbered words in a digital data signal are recorded on a first track group and a second track group, respectively, which are separated from each other in the widthwise direction of a recording medium, to prevent a series of words becoming error words because of, for example, a flaw in the recording medium in the longitudinal direction thereof. The data format is changed at the input and output of a recording encoder to enable an error correction code and a recording circuit to be used in common for digital tape recorders which have different numbers of tracks, e.g., n tracks and 2n tracks. When an error correction code is recorded in such a manner that one word in the digital data signal is divided into a plurality of symbols which are formed into an error correction code, a plurality of symbols of the same word are recorded at a position at which error correlation is strong, making effective use of the error correction capacity of the error correction code.

Abstract: The scanning locus of a rotary head type recording and reproducing apparatus is evaluated by reproducing a tape (1) having a number of oblique recording tracks (3). Respective track addresses are assigned to each track, and each track includes a number of block addresses. The track address and block address reproduced at a given time are supplied to an address map data storage device (17) to generate in the address map data storage device a set of map information indicative of the scanning conditions of the rotary heads (12A, 12B). This makes it possible to determine easily whether the reproducing conditions along the scanning locus with respect to the recording track are good or bad.

Abstract: In a digital signal reproducing apparatus various adjustment jobs and measurement jobs can be automatically executed by a simple operation by providing a clock generator, an external waveform equalizer, an error detector, an edge detection circuit, and a DC following circuit in addition to a waveform equalizer by which a reproduced analog signal waveform is processed and then converted to a digital signal. The digital signal is equalized by a digital filter and sampled and the digital signal and extracted clocks are supplied. The reproducing level and the equalizer coefficients can be automatically adjusted and an error rate can be automatically measured. A pulse width modulation or bias recording can be automatically determined and a recording current can be automatically adjusted by the system and the inclination of magnetic heads and the distance between the heads can also be automatically measured.
