Abstract: An improved ionization type smoke detector which is specifically designed to be independent of variations in atmospheric pressure and to be highly sensitive to smoke. A number of factors are involved in choosing optimum design parameters for an ionization smoke detector which has minimum sensitivity to pressure and which also has a maximum sensitivity to the presence of smoke. Several equations are described which aid in the design.

Abstract: 1299234 Analyzing gases NITTAN CO Ltd 6 Nov 1970 52838/70 Heading G1N [Also in Divisions H1 and H3] An ionization smoke detector comprises three electrodes 2, 3, 5 which form outer and inner ionization chambers 8 and 9 respectively such that air can pass into both chambers, and a single radio-active source 7 which irradiates both electrodes. An FET device 11 embedded in insulator disc 1 has its gate electrode connected to the intermediate electrode 3, emitter to the outer electrode 2 and collector to the inner electrode 5. A battery is connected between points A and B and the point C is connected by a Zener diode 15 to the control electrode of a Sicontrolled rectifier 16. When smoke enters the ionization chambers the potentional of the intermediate electrode 3 changes causing an increase of current through the FET device 11 until the voltage of the emitter exceeds the Zener voltage of diode 15 when the Si-controlled rectifier 16 is driven into conduction thereby energizing a relay 18 which triggers an alarm device 19.

Apparatus for detecting sub-micron particles in a gaseous carrier comprises a mixing and gas ionizing section, including means 17 for imparting turbulent flow to said gas, means 15 defining a delay volume 18 for receiving the particle-bearing gas and a source 25 of radiation to effect ionization of the gaseous carrier, operably joined to a detector section 30 including spaced electrodes 31 and 33. Gas, e.g. air, and entrained particles pass from an inlet 13 through openings 19 in diffusion baffle 17 to the delay volume 18 where the gas is ionized by an alpha source 25, e.g. Th 232, distributed uniformly along the wall of member 15, and then pass through openings 27 to the detector section 30, emerging through an opening 35 and leaving through exit 14. Electrode 31 is connected by a cable 36 to a sensing and amplifying device, e.g. an electrometer.

The density or degree of purity of gases, vapours or fumes, is measured by an ionization chamber 2, Fig.4, which is connected in series with a reference ionization chamber 1, also open to the gas under investigation, the distance between the electrodes being arranged so that the chamber has a high ion-recombination rate. In this arrangement both chambers are sensitive to pressure variations in the ambient gas but the measuring chamber is also sensitive to variations occurring in the chemical nature and the degree of concentration of the ambient gas. In the embodiment, the two chambers form a potential divider to a supply source 3, the common point 4 between the chambers being connected to the gate electrode 8 of a metal-oxide semi-conductor device 9, to actuate a meter 11, or relay. Resistances 12, 14 and a negative temperature coefficient resistance 13 form a network compensating for temperature variations of M.O.S device. A load 10, which can be an alarm circuit, a wire or wireless remote control circuit of any electric load in general, which is required, may be inserted either in the source or drain circuit of the M.O.S. device. The ionization chamber 2 consists of a cylindrical perforated electrode (35), Fig. 6 (not shown), with a central cylindrical electrode (32) which carries the radioactive charge. The reference chamber comprises two parallel disc electrodes 5, 6, the former being adjustable on screw (27) to vary the spacing between the electrodes, screw (28) locking the arrangement in position. The radioactive source is placed in the centre of the disc 5. The two chambers are enclosed within an outer chamber (21), Fig. 5 (not shown), having windows (22), (23), covered with metal grids (24), through which the ambient gas can enter the device.
