Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a quick release tip assembly for a liquefaction surgical handpiece. SOLUTION: The tip contains a lumen attached to a hub. The hub has a circumferential flange around its base. The handpiece contains a recess into which the hub fits. The bottom of the recess contains a plurality of movable snaps (elastic engaging members) or cramp members as sized to capture the flange on the tip hub. A slidable lever is connected to the snaps so that movement of the lever causes the snaps (elastic engaging members) to separate apart, thereby releasing the flange and allowing the tip to be easily removed from the handpiece. Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a phacoemulsification cutting tip which increases efficiency especially during the torsional ultrasonic operation. SOLUTION: The phacoemulsification tip having a crimped or swaged distal tip is provided. Swaging of the distal end of the phacoemulsification tip produces more efficient cutting during the torsional vibration of the tip by increasing the cutting surface area. COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI
Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a phacoemulsification tip, particularly twisted phacoemulsification cutting tip. SOLUTION: The phacoemulsification cutting tip 210 has a shaft 212 being arcuate or curved to the longitudinal axis over the whole length of the shaft. Such a feature serves to produce more efficient cutting during torsional vibration of the tip while maintaining a greater space between the distal end 214 of the tip and a posterior capsule. PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To decrease a flow of irrigation liquid flowing out of the distal end of a perfusion sleeve, thereby preventing the irrigation sleeve from being collapsed on a surgical needle or a surgical manipulator during insertion to a dissection part. SOLUTION: The surgical manipulator 112 has a shaft 113, and the comparatively flexible irrigation sleeve 114 includes: at least one port 116 and one opening distal end 122. This surgical apparatus includes: the irrigation sleeve substantially coaxial about the shaft of the surgical manipulator to form a gap communicating with the port and the opening distal end between the surgical manipulator and the irrigation sleeve; and a holding ring 110 fitted to the shaft to decrease flow of the irrigation in the gap flowing out of the opening distal end of the irrigation sleeve and accelerate the flow of the irrigation in the gap flowing out of the port, and having dimensions and shape to be held to the opening distal end of the irrigation sleeve by the shaft. PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a topical therapeutic agent for regulating an elevated intraocular pressure (IOP). SOLUTION: A useful glycogen synthase kinase-3 (GSK-3) inhibitor is used for treating glaucoma. The GSK-3 inhibitor can be used for treating glaucomatous optic neuropathy associated with normal-tension glaucoma, ocular hypertension, and/or glaucoma in warm blooded animals including human and/or lowering and controlling IOP. The compound is formulated in a pharmaceutical composition suitable for topical delivery to the eye. COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI
Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surgical device to illuminate a specific area during an operation of an eye, in particular, an improved variable luminous intensity, small aperture and wide-angle illuminator to illuminate a surgical field. SOLUTION: The illuminator is provided with: a handpiece optically coupled to a light source to receive a light beam from the light source; an optical fiber operably coupled to the handpiece and to receive the light beam from the light source; an optical device which is connected to the distal end of the optical fiber, receives and scatters the optical beam to illuminate the surgical field, and is equipped with a hemispherical sapphire piece; and a cannula to house and guide the optical fiber and the optical element. PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a lens delivery system suitable for storage, shipment and lens delivery to the eye. SOLUTION: The lens delivery system has a plunger, an injector body and a nozzle part connected to the injector body. The nozzle part has a hinged lid and a hollow body equipped with a lens holding platform formed beneath the hinged lid. The hinged lid contains a rib which helps to hold a lens stationary on the platform. A cartridge has a tip part with a bore, and this bore communicates with the platform. The bottom of the bore is rounded, and the edge of the lens is folded upwardly when the lens is pushed forward inside the bore. A removable pin fits into the lid and prevents the lens from moving inside the bore during shipment and storage. The plunger and the injector body contain a ratchet mechanism which helps prevent the plunger from moving during shipment and storage. COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI
Abstract:
A system and method improve a quality of sensor image data from a wavefront emanating from an eye. The sensor image data include a pixel array of intensities. A filter array is populated with a coefficient at each position of the array and the filter array is applied to each position in the pixel array. The system includes a process and a software package adapted to perform the above method steps.

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for optimizing the recipe to laser-ablation corneal treatment. SOLUTION: A method for optimizing a prescription for laser-ablation corneal treatment includes the steps of receiving a measured correction prescription for a current patient having a classification element associated therewith, the prescription having been measured using wavefront determination. A database of treatment outcomes on a plurality of previously treated patients is accessed, each treated patient outcome having associated therewith at least one classification element and comprising a preoperative wavefront-determined correction prescription and a postoperative visual profile. From the treatment outcomes in the database is calculated an average difference between the preoperative prescription and the postoperative profile for at least some of the previously treated patients having a classification element in common with the current patient. Finally the current patient correction prescription is adjusted commensurate with the calculated average difference to form an optimized prescription. COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO
