PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for determining selections of a coding type and a predictive mode. SOLUTION: A 4×4 predicative mode is selected, wherein: (1) by a coding type selecting algorithm, a coding type (16×16 or 4×4) for examining initially a macroblock is selected; (2) when the 16×16 coding type is selected, four 16×16 predictive modes that can be used on the macroblock are examined based on a distortion threshold by a conventional method or a 16×16 predictive mode searching algorithm that has been improved; and (3) when the 4×4 coding type is selected, a 4×4 predictive mode used with respect to each of sixteen 4×4 blocks of the macroblock is selected based on the position relationship between the predictive modes. PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a bus transceiver, in which a high speed binary transfer mode for half-duplex binary transfer of data signals is combined with a ternary control transfer mode, having a full-duplex dominant logic transmission scheme for full-duplex transfer of control signals. SOLUTION: This transceiver for communications via a transmission channel has a receiver connected to the transmitting channel, and the receiver receives data, according to a binary signal status driven on the transmitting channel from the transmitting channel in the first mode, and receives data, according to a ternary signal status driven on the transmitting channel from the transmission channel in the second mode. PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a system and a method for a help interface which is useful in a window-based computer display system. SOLUTION: An access window or a presentation window in which a user is displayed irrelevantly an application being executed and "drifts" on all other hierarchical windows, is offered. Both of these windows are in active states as they are, and can be operated by the user similarly to the displayed access window or the most upper window immediately below the presentation window. The other hierarchical windows located below the most upper application window are made to be in an inactive state. The access window includes alphabetic character scroll bar which spreads horizontally in the definition area. A plurality of alphabetic characters, symbol characters, or other characters ("characters" all together) are displayed along the length direction of the bar. A slider which enables selective positioning on a character displayed on the bar is offered. PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a filing system capable of composing information into a document collection and equipped with a graphic interface for supporting such kind of composition. SOLUTION: This filing system can automatically divide a pile 56 of a document collection (for instance, a document collection from an e-mail network) into sub-piles based on the contents of the respective documents in the pile. In addition, the filing system can automatically file a document into an existing pile in the computer system based on consistency of similarity between the content of the document (for instance, internal expression) and the content of the existing pile (for instance, internal expression) in the computer system by a request of a user. Additionally, the filing system can create a pile 56 from a sample document by using the internal expression of the document as the internal expression of the the new pile. PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an improved method and device for vector quantization (VQ) that constitute a code book in relation to data compression. SOLUTION: A code book 600 or a "tree" is initialized by setting the N pieces of an initial node (610) and generating the rest of the code book as a binary code book (650). The entries of children (670) are split based on the decision of various attributes such as a maximum distortion and a population. A vector obtained from data is associated with a children node, and the entries of a representative children are recalculated after that. This split/rerelation are repeated until the difference of a deviation in relation to a former offspring and a present children becomes smaller than a threshold value. This split and rerelation processings are continued until standards such as the terminal node of the maximum number is prepared in the tree or a total deviation or a distortion is reached to a threshold value.
