Abstract: Apparatus for imaging an object ( 13 ) irradiated with an X-ray beam ( 12 ) by detecting a transmitted X-ray beam transmitted through the object. A crystal analyser ( 15 ) receives the transmitted X-ray beam and emits a first diffracted X-ray beam to a detector assembly ( 14 ) comprising first and second X-ray detectors ( 16 and 17 ). The first detector ( 16 ) is a monochromating semiconductor detector which detects a first portion of the first diffracted X-ray beam to generate first image data, and which diffracts a second portion of the first diffracted beam to the second detector ( 17 ) which generates second image data. Image processing means ( 18 ) are provided for combining the first and second image data to derive a refraction image and an absorption image of the object ( 13 ).

Abstract: A device for detecting a property of a fluid includes a body region and a flexible element having a first end and a second end. The first end is fixedly located on the body region. The flexible element is arranged to move from at least a first configuration to a second configuration via bending of the flexible element. The flexible element includes an actuating portion arranged to move the flexible element between the first configuration and the second configuration. The device also includes a movement detector for detecting movement of the flexible element.

Abstract: Apparatus and methods for electrospinning, electrojetting and/or electrospraying are disclosed. The apparatus includes a nozzle for the formation of a fluid jet from a fluid cone, the nozzle having a plurality of ducts arranged for supplying a plurality of fluids for use in the formation of the fluid jet. The ducts may issue onto one or more openings, for example, concentric openings for the production of core-shell nanofibres and particles, or core- multishell nanofibres and particles. The apparatus may also include a manifold for supplying the fluids to the nozzle from one or more fluid reservoirs.

Abstract: A method of aligning an optical component in a laser system using diffraction patterns of alignment references includes: placing a first alignment reference in the path of a laser beam upstream of an optical component, the first alignment reference having first reference features forming a first diffraction pattern when illuminated by the laser beam; placing a second alignment reference in the path of the laser beam downstream of the first alignment reference and the optical component, the second alignment reference having second reference features forming a second diffraction pattern when illuminated by the laser beam; illuminating the alignment references and optical component with the laser beam; monitoring the combined diffraction pattern of the reference features of the alignment references downstream of the second alignment reference; and adjusting the relative position and/or orientation of the optical component towards the combined diffraction pattern indicating alignment of the optical component to the laser beam. There is also disclosed a system of diffraction-based alignment references for aligning an optical component in a laser system.

Abstract: A mounting vane 100 for an optical element 125 of a laser or , optical amplifier for example, a Pockells cell, Faraday isolator or frequency conversion stage. The vane cools the optical element by a fluid stream. The optical element may be a heat generating element. The mounting vane comprises an input section 105 with a leading edge 110 for meeting the fluid stream; a diffuser section 130 which tapers to a trailing edge; and a plane section with an aperture tor receiving the optical element for cooling by the fluid stream, the plane section arranged between the input section and diffuser section. The diffuser section 130 includes one or more flow guiding fins protruding from the diffuser section. The mounting vane may be stacked with a plurality of other mounting vanes in a manifold.

Abstract: A sensor array comprising an array of pixels and a method of operating the same are disclosed. Each pixel of the sensor array comprises: a photodiode; a node arranged to develop a voltage based on charge accumulated at the photodiode due to photogeneration; and a first overflow unit 200 coupled to the node. The first overflow unit comprises a transistor and a capacitance. The sensor array is arranged to control the first overflow unit to accept overflow charge from the node into the capacitance of that overflow unit, and to subsequently read the overflow charge stored at the capacitance. Each pixel may comprise one or more further overflow units in series with the first overflow unit. The overflow units provide the sensor array with enhanced dynamic range. Also disclosed is a single pixel sensor with enhanced dynamic range. This arrangement results in a sensor array in which each pixel may have multiple capacitors. The arrangement also has readout circuitry 100 which can read the charge held by both the photodiode and overflow unit.
