    Abstract: PURPOSE: A method for preparing an electrolyte membrane-electrode assembly for a direct methanol fuel cell or a polymer fuel cell is provided, to reduce the transfer resistance of a reactant and a product and to increase the catalyst supporting amount per unit area, thereby improving the performance of a fuel cell. CONSTITUTION: The method comprises the steps of mixing carbon powder and a polymer ionomer solution to make an ink, coating both the sides of an electrolyte membrane(15) with the ink to form a carbon(16)-ionomer(18) film; evaporating and depositing a mono-component or multi-component-system metal catalyst used as a catalyst of an anode and a cathode on the coated electrolyte membrane in a plasma sputtering reactor, to form a catalyst film(14) on the carbon-ionomer film; and repeating the two processes to form the multilayered carbon-ionomer and catalyst films both the sides of the membrane. Preferably the electrolyte membrane is a poly perfluoro sulfonate-based solid polymer membrane with the thickness of 25-150 micrometers; the carbon powder is carbon black with the particle size of 1-100 nm and the surface area of 50-1,000 m¬2/g; and the polymer ionomer is a hydrogen ion-conductive poly perfluoro sulfonate-based material and it is dissolved in alcohols by the concentration of 5-15 wt%.
