Abstract: Described herein is a method of purifying a target molecule from an aqueous biological composition, the method comprising: (a) contacting a cationic polymer and the aqueous biological composition to form a mixture, the mixture comprising a bio-polymer complex and the target non-binding molecule in a liquid, wherein the bio-polymer complex has an average particle diameter of at least 50 micrometers; (b) providing a filtering unit comprising (i) a housing having an inlet and an outlet, (ii) a porous, continuous filter medium which is fluidly connected to the inlet and the outlet, and (iii) a collection region upstream from the porous, continuous filter medium; (c) adding the mixture to the inlet; and (d) allowing the mixture to separate in the filtering unit, whereby the bio-polymer complex collects in the collection region and the target non-binding molecule passes through the filter medium, and wherein the majority of flow of the liquid through the porous, continuous filter medium is not substantially parallel with the direction of gravity.

Abstract: A wipe article includes a substrate, a cationic coating disposed on a surface of the substrate, distributed throughout the substrate, or both. The cationic coating contains a guanidinyl-containing polymer that is crosslinked and bound to the substrate. The substrate includes sponge, nonwoven fabric, or woven fabric. The wipes are useful for removing microorganisms from a microorganism-contaminated surface and also for reducing re-contamination of the cleaned surface or transfer to another surface of the removed microorganisms.

Abstract: A filtration media is disclosed comprising a hydrophobic monomer grafted onto a support, the hydrophobic monomer having the structure: CH2═CR4C(O)NHC(R1R1)(C(R1R1))nC(O)XR3 wherein n is an integer of 0 or 1; R1 is independently selected from at least one of: a hydrogen atom, alkyls, aryls, and alkylaryls, wherein the alkyls, aryls, and alkylaryls have a total of 10 carbon atoms or less; R3 is a hydrophobic group selected from at least one of: alkyls, aryls, alkylaryls and ethers, wherein the alkyls, aryls, alkylaryls and ethers have a total number of carbon atoms ranging from 4 to 30; R4 is H or CH3; X is O or NH. In some embodiments the hydrophobic monomer is derived from an amine or an alcohol (HXR3) that has a hydrophilicity index of 25 or less. Such media may be used in applications such as hydrophobic interaction chromatography.

Abstract: A method of purifying a biological composition includes: disposing loose cationic ligand-functionalized staple fibers and a biological composition within a mixing volume of a vessel; agitating the biological composition and the loose cationic ligand-functionalized staple fibers while they are in intimate contact with each other within the mixing volume to provide modified fibers and a purified biological composition; and separating at least a portion of the purified biological composition from the modified fibers and any loose cationic ligand-functionalized staple fibers with which it is in contact. The loose cationic ligand-functionalized staple fibers have a modified surface layer comprising a grafted acrylic polymer comprising 10 to 100 percent by weight of a cationically-ionizable monomer unit. An article for purifying a biological composition includes: a vessel having a mixing volume disposed therein; and the loose cationic ligand-functionalized staple fibers disposed within the mixing volume.

Abstract: A process for separating aggregated proteins from monomeric proteins in a biological solution, the process including: providing at least one filter element having a contacting surface, wherein the filter element comprises filter media comprising: a porous substrate; and disposed on the porous substrate, a polymer comprising a hydrocarbon backbone and a plurality of pendant groups attached to the hydrocarbon backbone, wherein each of a first plurality of pendant groups comprises: (1) at least one acidic group or salt thereof; and (2) a spacer group that directly links the at least one acidic group or salt thereof to the hydrocarbon backbone by a chain of at least 6 catenated atoms; and allowing an initial biological solution to contact the contacting surface of the filter element N under conditions effective to separate the aggregated proteins from the monomeric proteins such that a final biological solution includes purified monomeric proteins.

Abstract: A process for preparing guanidino-functional, free radically polymerizable compounds comprises (a) combining (1) an amine compound comprising (i) at least one primary aliphatic amino group and (ii) at least one secondary aliphatic amino group, primary aromatic amino group, or secondary aromatic amino group, and (2) a guanylating agent; (b) allowing or inducing reaction of the amine compound and the guanylating agent to form a guanylated amine compound; (c) combining (1) the guanylated amine compound, and (2) a reactive monomer comprising (i) at least one ethylenically unsaturated group and (ii) at least one group that is reactive with an amino group; and (d) allowing or inducing reaction of the guanylated amine compound and the reactive monomer to form a guanidino-functional, free radically polymerizable compound.
