    Abstract: Fire resistant thermoplastic moulding materials contain (A) 5-99.5 wt.% copolymers derived from monomers of formula (I) and (II), where R1, R2 = H or 1-22C alkyl; R3 = H or 1-4C alkyl; and a, b = 0, 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5; (B) 0-89.5 wt.% polymers other than (A); (C) 0.5-20 wt.% fire retardant; and (D) 0-50 wt.% other additives and processing aids. Pref. component (A) is a copolymer of 1,1-diphenylethylene (DPE) and styrene, pref. a block copolymer of formula (A'-B')n, A'-B'-A', A'-(B'-A')m, B'-A'-B', B'-(A'-B')m, XÄ(A'-B')nÜm, X-Ä(B'-A')nÜm, XÄ(A'-B'-A')nÜm, XÄB'-A'-B')nÜm, XÄ(A'-B')nB'pÜm, XÄ(B'-A')nB'pÜm, XÄ(A'-B')nA'qÜm, XÄ(B'-A')nA'qÜm, B'p-X-(A'-B')n or A'q-X-(B'-A')n, A' = a copolymer block derived from (I) and (II); B' = a block derived from monomer (II); X = residue of an at least difunctional coupling agent; n, p, q = 1-10; and m = 2-20.

    Abstract: The invention pertains to a process for continuous preparation of impact-resistant modified vinyl aromatic compounds, in particular impact-resistant modified polystyrene, wherein the vinyl aromatic compound and the impact-resistant modifying agent, a rubber-elastic block copolymer, are produced separately by anionic polymerization in a reaction zone with or without heat exchange with the environment - if necessary with the addition of a solvent - polymerized until complete conversion and the active chain ends are terminated in a per se known way. The invention also pertains to a thermoplastic impact-resistant modified molding compound based on a vinyl aromatic compound with a residual content of less than 50 ppm monomers and less than 100 ppm oligomers.

    Abstract: Thermoplastic moulding materials contain (A) 40-100 wt.% copolymers of monomers of formula (I) and (II) R1, R2 = H or 1-22C alkyl; R3 = H or 1-4C alkyl; a, b = 0,1 2,3,4, or 5; (B) 0-3000 ppm. of cpds. (I) (w.r.t. wt. of A); (C) 0-500 ppm. of cpds. (II) (w.r.t. wt. of A); (D) 0-60 wt.% polymers other than (A) and (E) 0-50 wt.% other additives etc.. Also claimed is a process for the prodn. of these materials by anionic polymerisation, by adding (II) to (I) by the gradient method so that the amt. of (II) added per unit time is gradually reduced in proportion to the amt. of unreacted monomer (I) with increasing reaction time. Also claimed are block copolymers of formula (A-B)n, A-B-A, B-A-B, X((A-B)n)m, X((B-A)n)m), X((A-B-A)n)m or X((B-A-B)n)m; A = a block of copolymer (I/II); B = a block based on monomer (II); X = residue of m-functional coupling agent; n = 1-5; m = 2-20. Also claimed are thermoplastic moulding materials contg. a block copolymer as above, with 0-3000 ppm. (I) and 0-500 ppm. (II).
