Abstract: Cobalt catalysts (I) are claimed, in which the active material contains 55-98 wt% Co, 0.2-15 wt% P, 0.2-15 wt% Mn and 0.05-5 wt% alkali metal, calcd. as oxide. The calcined catalyst is reduced in a stream of hydrogen at final temps. of 200-400[deg]C and then surface-oxidised in a stream of air at final temps. of 20-60[deg]C. Also claimed is a process for the hydrogenation of organic nitriles and/or imines at 60-150[deg]C and 50-300 bar using (I) as catalyst.

Abstract: Prepn. of 3-aminomethyl-3,5,5-trimethylcyclohexylamine (isophorone diamine; IPDA) from 3-cyano-3,5,5-trimethyl-cyclohexanone (isophorone nitrile; IPN) is carried out in three separate reaction zones by: (a) reacting IPN with excess liquid NH3 at 20-150 deg.C and 50-300 bar; (b) hydrogenating the reaction prod. with H2 in the presence of excess NH3 at 50-100 deg.C and 50-300 bar; and (c) hydrogenating the reaction prod. with N2 at 110-160 deg.C and 150-300 bar. Acidic metal oxide catalyst is used in stage (a); and hydrogenation catalyst, opt. with basic components or on neutral or basic supports, in stages (b) and (c).

Abstract: Cobalt catalysts whose catalitically active composition consists of from 55 to 98% by wt. of cobalt, from 0.2 to 15% by wt. of phosphorus, from 0.2 to 15% by wt. of manganese and from 0.2 to 15% by wt. of alkali, calculated as oxide, by calcining the catalyst composition in a first step at final temperatures of from 550 to 750 DEG C and in a second step at final temperatures of from 800 to 1000 DEG C and also a process for hydrogenating organic nitriles and/or imines by use of the new cobalt catalysts.
