    Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain the title body which can change markedly in its viscoelastic properties when an electric field is applied thereto and can enable the direct electrical control of e.g., general industbrial parts for energy absorption or vibration damping such as a damper. CONSTITUTION:The title body is prepared by dispersing at least one fine powder having a mean particle diameter of 0.5-500mum, being capable of electrically polarized when an electric field is applied thereto and selected from among(1) a fine carbonaceous powder, (2) composite particles in which fine particles are nonuniformly dispersed in such a manner that the fine particles are densely present near the surfaces and the particles are less densely present on the side of their cores, (3) composite particles in which fine particles are uniformly dispersed in a matrix phase, (4) composite particles in which fine particles are dispersed in a matrix phase, and 5) a fine powder comprising two-dimensional laminar composite particles in an electrical insulation polymeric material having a modulus of elasticity of 10 -10 dyn/cm .

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To solve the deterioration in the physical properties of an organic member by sealing an electrically viscous liquid in a device and preventing the extraction of components essential for the practical use of the organic member from the organic member of the device contacting with the electrically viscous liquid. CONSTITUTION:An electrically viscous fluid to be charged into a shock absorber 1 is preliminarily compounded with components such as a plasticizer to be extracted with the electrically viscous fluid from an organic member such as flexible member 2 contacting with the electrically viscous fluid. Since the concentrations in the electrically viscous fluid of the components to be extracted with the electrically viscous fluid is balanced with the concentration of the components in the organic member such as a rubber or resin member in the phase equilibrium, the extraction of the components from the organic member is practically prevented and the deterioration in the physical properties of the organic member is eliminated.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain an electroviscous fluid which has a large electroviscous effect and gives the effect stably in a wide temperature range by dispersing a powder specified in specific gravity and water content in an oily medium comprising a mixture of specific cyclic phosphonitrile compounds. CONSTITUTION:An electroviscous fluid prepared by dispersing a powder which has a specific gravity of 1.2 or more and a water content of 4.0wt.% or less in an oily medium which is a mixture of cyclic phosphonitrile compounds represented in molecular structure by the formula (wherein n is 3-15; and R1 and R2 are each an aromatic compound derivative), the content of the compounds in which the number(n) of P=N bond units is 3 being 90% or less by mole in the mixture, the content of the compounds in which n is 7 being 1% or more by mole in the mixture. The powder includes nonoxide powders such as carbonaceous powder and SiC powder and oxide powders such as zeolite, amorphous silica and clay minerals.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain a phosphazene oil, composed of a mixture of specific phosphonitrile ring compounds, having a low vapor pressure, a high dielectric constant and chemically stabilized characteristics, excellent in flame retardancy and useful as electrical insulating oils, power transmission oils, vacuum, oils, mold release agents, etc. CONSTITUTION:A flame retardant oil which is a mixture of phosphonitrile ring compounds having a molecular structure expressed by the formula [R1 and R2 are aromatic compound derivative (A) or aliphatic compound derivative (B); n is 3-15]. The aforementioned mixture contains compounds having both (A) and (B) as side chain groups in the same molecule in an amount of >=85% expressed in terms of mol fraction. Furthermore, the aforementioned oil is composed of (i) a mixture having the side chain groups (A) and (B) in numbers of mol thereof at a ratio [(B)/(A)] of 0.125-8 as the whole mixture, (ii) a mixture in which the content of compounds having the number (n) of P=N bond units of 3 in the compounds is =4 is >=10% or (iii) a mixture simultaneously satisfying (i) and (ii).

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain the subject powder excellent in stability for a long period and stability to temperature by specifying the value of C/H ratio within a specified range and/or the amount of weight loss within a specific temperature range in nitrogen atmosphere within a specified range. CONSTITUTION:Carbonaceous powder used as dielectric fine particles in an electroviscous fluid obtained by dispersing the dielectric fine particles in an oily medium excellent in electrical insulating properties. The aforementioned powder is provided so as to satisfy at least one condition of the following. The value of the ratio (C/H) between the numbers of carbon atoms to hydrogen atoms within the range of 1.70-3.50 and the amount of weight loss at a temperature within the range of 400-600 deg.C in nitrogen atmosphere within the range of 0.5-13.0wt.%. Thereby, the objective carbon powder excellent in stability for a long period and stability to temperature for an electroviscous fluid is obtained.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To provide a non-aqueous electro viscous fluid having excellent heat and cold resistance and high electro viscous effect and requiring only a low consumption electric power by dispersing specific carbonaceous fine particles in an electrically insulating oil, the surfaces of the carbonaceous fine powder being covered with the thin film layers of a high molecular polymer. CONSTITUTION:The objective electro viscous fluid is prepared by dispersing fine particles in an electrically insulating oil, the fine particles being prepared by covering the surfaces of carbonaceous fine particles having aC/H ratio of 2.4-3.0 with the thin film layers of a polymer such as poly methyl methacrylate, PS, PVAc, PVC, poly vinylidene fluoride, epoxy resin, phenolic resin or silicone polymer. The carbonaceous fine particles are preferably those prepared by separating from a pitch component optically isotropic small spheres produced by the thermal treatment of coal tar.
