Abstract: PURPOSE:To improve the appearance by setting the direction in which virtual tilt angles in the center wavelength of each filter color of color filters are averaged, as the average molecule axial direction of a liquid crystal cell and setting a polarizer, based on said direction as a reference. CONSTITUTION:When values of virtual tilt angles in the center wavelength of spectral transmittivity of color filters R, G and B are averaged, its result becomes -thetaa=6.8 deg.. Therefore, the direction of -thetaa is set to the direction which is inclined by 6.8 deg. against the rubbing direction of an FLC cell. Simultaneously, an analyzer 21 is set to the direction which is shifted by 90 deg. against a polarizer 23. In such constitution, when the light source of a daylight color type whose wavelength characteristic is comparatively continuous is used as a backlight 24, and the appearance of the cell is observed, a satisfactory result can be obtained.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce local shrinkage and deformation of an insulating layer by suppressing oxidation, etc., of the insulating layer accompanying heating. SOLUTION: To manufacture a liquid crystal panel P, a metal electrode 5b and an insulating layer 6b are formed on the top surface of a glass substrate 3b and a flat surface is fold of them. Then baking is carried out when an orientation control films 7b is formed and an oven into which nitrogen gas is introduced to less than 98 oxygen density is used for the baking. Consequently, the oxidation of the insulating layer 6b accompanying the baking is suppressed to suppress its local shrinkage and deformation. Consequently, the drivable pulse width range (M2 margin) of the liquid crystal panel P is improved and the liquid crystal panel P has excellent driving characteristics.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a liquid crystal element of excellent display definition by making the normal direction of a smectic layer at a chiral smectic phase substantially vertical in the long side direction of one pixel so as to prevent the deterioration of a contrast ratio with the generation of a driving detective domain. SOLUTION: At the time of using a liquid crystal showing a chiral smectic phase, the driving defective domain 16 responding to the period of an information signal generated at the boundary part between a display driving area 10 and a driving impossible area 12 is generated in a vertical direction with respect to a layer normal direction (the normal direction of the smectic layer) in particular. Then, a rubbing direction is made nearly vertical to the long side of a pixel 11 to make the layer normal direction of the chiral smectic phase nearly vertical to the long side direction of the pixel 11 to suppress influence to the display driving area 10 of the domain 16. Consequently, a driving defective part can be concentrated to the short side of the side of the area existing between electrodes to reduce the area of the driving defective part in proportion to the aspect ratio of a pixel 11.

Abstract: PURPOSE: To prevent displacement of metal electrodes during laminating substrates and to make a uniform cell gap. CONSTITUTION: A hard part 26 is disposed on the back (lower side) of each metal electrode 7 and the metal electrode 7 is held by the hard part 26. Therefore, when the pressing force on the glass substrate 11 concentrates through the spacer 13 to the metal electrode 7 during laminating the substrates, the hard part 26 does not deform and as a result, the metal electrode 7 does not cause displacement to the glass substrate 2 side. Thereby, deformation of the transparent electrode 6 due to displacement of metal electrode 7 can be prevented and the cell gap is made uniform. Thereby, the electric field during driving an liquid crystal display element is equal for all electrodes, which makes the threshold voltage to drive the liquid crystal equal. Thus, the effective operational voltage range is increased and proper display characteristics are obtd.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To provide a liquid crystal element which hardly generates a fluctuation of a cell thickness with simple constitution and a device formed by using this element. CONSTITUTION:This liquid crystal element has substrates 11a, 11b which have a pair of electrodes 12a, 12b facing each other and a chiral smectic liquid crystal 15 which is disposed between a pair of these electrodes and exhibits a state of bistable states. The inside surfaces of the substrates 11a, 11b are so subjected to orientation treatments that the moving direction when the one state of the bistable states is placed under an electric field is the same direction as the moving direction when the other state is placed under the electric field. The orientation treatment of a frame region 32 is varied from the orientation treatment of a display region 31. The same effect is obtd. by improving driving conditions, the oriented films of the frame region and the orientation treatment method.
