    Abstract: PURPOSE:To suppress the movement of a liquid crystal and to decrease or eliminate an increase in a cell thickness without impairing image quality by forming the surfaces between the electrodes of one substrate to a fine rugged shape and providing beam-shaped parts taller than the surfaces of electrodes between the electrodes of the other substrate. CONSTITUTION:A liquid crystal cell has a pair of the upper substrate 11a and lower substrate 11b disposed in parallel and the transparent electrodes 12a, 12b wired to the respective substrates 11a, 11b. A ferroelectric liquid crystal, more preferably a ferroelectric smectic liquid crystal 15 having at least two stable states and a non-spiral structure is disposed via orientation control films. The surfaces 18a having the fine rugged shape are formed between the electrodes 12a of the substrate 1a and have >=0.1mum max. height difference. The beam-shaped members 18b are formed between the transparent electrodes 12b. These beam-shaped members 18b are constituted of, for example, an insulator, such as polyimide, and metal, such as Mo or Al, or the two layers consisting of the metal and the insulator and is formed by photolithography, etc.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To prevent the display defect when white or black fixed shape patterns are kept subjected to writing driving by forming stripe ruggedness in parallel with the longitudinal direction of electrodes on the surface of the transparent electrodes on at least one substrate. CONSTITUTION:The stripe 2 shaped ruggedness parallel with the longitudinal direction of the electrodes 1 is formed on the surface of the transparent electrodes 1 of at least one substrate 3 of the ferroelectric liquid crystal display element holding the ferroelectric liquid crystal between the 1st preferably having the transparent electrodes to constitute selection electrodes and a 2nd substrate having the transparent electrodes to constitute common electrodes. The ruggedness is formed by providing the plural thin-film stripe electrodes 2 on the transparent electrodes 1. Further, the ruggedness is formed by providing the plural thin-film stripe electrodes 2 under the transparent electrodes 1. The thin-film stripe electrodes 2 consist of a transparent conductive material. The metallic thin-film stripe electrodes consisting of materials exclusive of the transparent conductive material are otherwise formed. The moving speed of the liquid crystal at the time of the black or white fixed shape pattern display is drastically lowered in this way and the degradation in display grade is prevented.

SOLUTION: A liquid crystal display element comprises two electrode substrates 12, 14, placed opposite to each other, holding a smectic liquid crystal in between. In this case the liquid crystal display element has a smectic layer structure in a display region 15 which is open either at the side of injection port 36 or at the side of flow out port 31 and the layer structure is not interrupted with sealing members 11, 16 at one side and is interrupted with the sealing members 11, 16 at the other side.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve incompleteness of a liquid crystal cell which is caused at the time of a heat treatment after pouring, to improve the uniformity of the cell thickness, and to suppress cell thickness variation due to external force by providing an area wherein the gap between electrode substrates is variable at a part of the liquid crystal display device. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display device constituted by sandwiching smectic liquid crystal between two electrode substrates which are arranged opposite each other has adhering members for adhering the upper and lower substrates 11 and 12 distributed between the upper and lower substrates 11 and 12 so that the density is varied so as to have an area 18 wherein the gap between the electrode substrates is variable at a part of the device. Consequently, it is made easy to cause variation in cell thickness by the volume expansion of the liquid crystal at a low-density part of adhesion members and then the heat treatment after the pouring of the liquid crystal into the liquid crystal cell is enabled. The cell-thickness variable area 18 wherein the cell thickness can be varied is arranged in a direction wherein the liquid crystal is easy to move in the display area. Further, the cell-thickness variable area 18 is provided in an adhering-member excluding area 15 where no adhering member is present.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make it possible to obtain an element which lessens the deformation in the thickness of a cell and has the excellent uniformity of the cell thickness by providing at least part of a sealing part with a shape variable portion for absorbing the change in the internal pressure of the cell. SOLUTION: This liquid crystal display element has the shape variable portion 13 for absorbing the change in the internal pressure of the cell generated by the volumetric expansion of liquid crystals which occurs at the time of a heat treatment after filling of the liquid crystals in at least part of the sealing part 21 for adhering two sheets of electrode substrates 11, 14 arranged to face each other. The shape variable portion 13 of the sealing part 21 is formed by adhering a polycarbonate resin sheet 16 to the cell by an epoxy adhesive 17. Since the rubbing direction faces the direction upward from below, the smectic layer structure in the cell is formed in a lateral direction and the ease of the movement of the liquid crystals is large in the lateral direction and small in the vertical direction. Then, the shape variable portion 13 of the sealing member is installed in the direction where the liquid crystals in the display region are easy to move.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the influence of antielectric field effect and crosstalk between pixels. SOLUTION: On one substrate 2, an orientation control film 10 is fold which has uniaxial orientation characteristics to limpid crystal molecules and on the other substrate 3, a film 7 is formed which has nonuniaxial orientation characteristics to the liquid crystal molecules. This film 7 has a polycrystalline structure which has nearly no crystal grain boundary in its film thickness direction and crystal grain boundaries in its film surface direction. Consequently, the film 7 has low volume resistivity along the film thickness and high volume resistivity along the film surface. Those volume resistivity values are set within a specific range to prevent the influence of antielectric field effect and crosstalk between pixels.
