Abstract: Several different embodiments of an electronic document delivery system are described including a client machine (e.g., a palmtop/handheld computer or wireless communication device) coupled to a transcoder proxy. The system allows a client machine with limited resources to provide interactive aspects of electronic documents such as Web pages and/or an assistive technology solution for a physically challenged user. The transcoder proxy receives an electronic document including one or more elements and expressed in a first digital format (e.g., HTML or XML). The transcoder proxy assigns a unique identifier to each element, produces an "original" script including at least a portion of the document expressed in a second digital format (e.g., a scripting language), and provides the original script to the client machine. The transcoder proxy may form a model of the document (e.g., a document object model or DOM), and may use the model to produce the original script. The client machine uses the original script to display or otherwise present the portion of the document. The client machine generates an event in response to user input, associates the event with an element within the original script, and provides the event and the identifier assigned to the element to the transcoder proxy. The transcoder proxy accesses the model using the identifier, uses the model to produce a "modification" script, and provides the modification script to the client machine. The client machine uses the modification script to modify the displayed or otherwise presented portion of the document.

Abstract: The present invention enables a facility (home, business or industrial site) to optimize the consumption of energy in that facility. In this invention, the power compani es that supply energy provide information to its client facilities on the cost and availability of energy from that company on a real-time basis. Each client facility would have a power accounting server. These servers store this and process this information to predict when the rates for using the energy will be the least expensive for a particular task or to operate a particular appliance. A homeowner (client facility) for example can program appliances such as a dishwasher or laundry machine t o turn on when the cost of energy is below a particular threshold price. The present invention has the capability to receive characteristics about a particular appliance, generate a list of energy consumption options for that particular product at a particular time period and select and implement the most efficient energy supply option. This invention can also enable a client facility that generates energy to efficiently use the generated energy and sell any excess energy to another e nd user or to other energy consumers.

Abstract: A method, program and system for providing access to alternate formats within an electronic document are provided. The invention comprises parsing a web page and creating a document object model (DOM), and then parsing the alternate format attribute of an image element within the DOM. The browser then displays the web page containing an image (or images) according to the default settings of the browser. A user interface is specified which allows the user to select alternate formats for the default image. This user interface may be in the form of a pop up menu that is presented to the user in response to an input command, such as a right mouse click on the default image. The user can then select an alternate format which replaces the original image in the web page. Alternate formats may include text, audio, or tactile formats.

Abstract: A customer buys an electronic ticket from a merchant that includes the customer's security features. The merchant indicates which security features the merchant is able to proce ss and the customer selects from those security features based upon the customer's established security features. The merchant receives the customer's security features a link to the security features that are stored on a security server. If a security server is used, the customer authorizes the merchant access to the chosen security features. The customer prints the ticket and presents it for admission. The ticket includes a barcode that is scanned for fast retrieval of the purchaser's security features previously provided by the customer. The retrieved security features are compared to bo th the ticket holder's features and the security features appearing on the ticket to identify a thi ef or imposter.

Abstract: A system, method, and program for enabling communication between a client and a device are disclosed. A server receives a request for enabling communication from a client to a device. In response to the server receiving the request, an appropriate device driver stored in the server is selected and executed to translate the communication between the client and the device. The translated communication that is comprehensible by the device is sent from the server to the device through the client. In a preferred embodiment, the server accesses various device drivers for various devices. The device drivers are stored in a library in the server. The server determines and recognizes a client type for the client and a device type for the device. Based on the client type and the device type, the appropriate device driver is selected from the library and executed to translate the communication between the client and the device.

Abstract: An overloaded or partially functional Web server in an Internet environment receives an HTTP request for data from a client during a given communication session 301, determines the extent to which the Web server is overloaded or partially functional 302, 304, and sends the requested data to the client at a later time and outside of the given session such as by e-mail to an e-mail address of a user using the client 309, or by a push technique to the client itself if either a permission to push is received from the client or a push definition file is sent to the client indicating at least a time that the Web server will not be overloaded. In another embodiment, the Web server determines whether it can satisfy at least a portion of the request at the present time. If so, then a portion of the data is sent to the client during the given session, and all of the requested data is sent at a later time and outside of the given session either by e-mail or a push technique.
