    Abstract: The present invention balances the amplitude and phase of a received QPSK signal that may have been corrupted during transmission. The system determines the amplitude of the I and Q symbols of a received signal, compares them, and applies a correction to one or both channels to correct for amplitude imbalance. For phase imbalance, the system calculates the cross-correlation of the I and Q symbols which should average to zero. A correction factor is derived from the cross--correlation and applied to both channels, returning the phase cross-correlation to zero. The output from the system is a signal corrected in both amplitude and phase.

    Abstract: A communication method for use with a code division multiple access (CDMA) subscriber unit is disclosed. The method includes generating a first code wherein the first code has a first length and generating a second code wherein the second code has a second length greater than the first length and a period which is aligned with the length of the first code. A first radio frequency signal is transmitted from an antenna of the CDMA subscriber unit wherein the first radio frequency signal carries the first code at a first power level, at least a portion of the second code, and data. In an absence of an acknowledgement signal received by the CDMA subscriber unit, a power level of the first code is set to a second power level wherein the second power level is greater than the first power level.
