    Abstract: PURPOSE:To prepare indoles useful as a synthetic raw material of perfumery and amino acids, in one step, with low production of by-products, in high selectivity, by the gas phase reaction of anilines and ethylene glycol available at low costs in the presence of a copper-containing catalyst. CONSTITUTION:Indole or its derivative is prepared by the gas-phase reaction of anilines (e.g. aniline, p-toluidine, p-aminophenol, etc.) with ethylene glycol in the presence of a copper-containing catalyst (e.g. metallic copper, copper oxide, etc.) at 200-500 deg.C, pref.250-400 deg.C. The amount of ethylene gylcol is 0.01-5mol/mol of aniline.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To prepare indole or its derivative, with low production of by-products, in one step and in high selectivity, by the gas phase reaction of aniline (an inexpensive starting material) with a glycol in the presence of a catalyst containing cadmium chloride or zinc chloride. CONSTITUTION:Indole or an indole-derivative is prepared by the gas phase reaction of aniline with a 1,2-glycol of formula (R1-R4 are H, 1-4C alkyl which may be substituted with OH, halogen or CN) in the presence of a catalyst containing cadmium chloride and/or zinc chloride at 200-500 deg.C. The catalyst may be cadmium chloride, zinc chloride, their mixture, or a mixture of each compound with other compounds (e.g. NaCl, KCl, etc.).

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound, by oxidizing anthracene in the vapor phase with oxygen in the presence of a catalyst, particularly molybdenum and/or vanadium oxides. CONSTITUTION:Anthracene (A) or an organic compond containing A, e.g. an anthracene fraction, is brought into contact with oxygen or an oxygen-containing gas (G) in the presence of a vapor phase oxidation catalyst, e.g. molybdenum and/ or vanadium oxides at 300-650 deg.C to give the objective compound in a simple step efficiently without using expensive durene. The molar ratio of A to G is 1:100,000- 1:100.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain high-purity pyromellitic anhydride with ease useful as a raw material of a high-performance heat-resistant resin without requiring complex operations by heating an aromatic polyfunctional carboxylic acid or its acid ester in a hot flow of an inert gas. CONSTITUTION:An aromatic polyfunctional carbixylic acid shown by the formula (R is H or 1-4C alkyl; n is 5 or 6; with the proviso that 5-6 R may be different) or its acid ester is heated in a hot flow of an inert gas, e.g., nitrogen, helium or argaon gas at 200-600 deg.C to give high-purity pyromellitic anhydride. Sulfuric acid, a solvent which will be handled with very difficulty in the after-treatment is not used so that complex operations are not required.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To prepare the title compound useful as raw material of heat-resistant resin, by hydrolyzing a compound obtained by the reaction of a polyhalogenated aryl compound with an inorganic cyan compound in the presence of a specific ion in a proper solvent. CONSTITUTION:An aromatic polyhydric carboxylic acid of formula II (R is H, methyl; n is 3-6) is prepared by (1) reacting 1 mole of an aromatic derivative of formula I (X is Cl, Br, I) with 1.0-1.5 moles of an inorganic cyan compound (e.g. NaCN, KCN) in a polar organic solvent (e.g. N-methylformamide) in the presence of Cu (e.g. CuCl2, CuBr2), at 150-300 deg.C, and (2) hydrolyzing the reaction product.
