Abstract: Indoles were prepd. by reacting aniline or its derivs. with 1,2- glycol under catalysts. Thus, a soln. contg. 30 g cadmium nitrate and 19 g 60%-HNO3 in 300 ml H2O was mixed with 130 g glass fiber contg. 29% SiO2 and 9% Na2O in 2 liters H2O to give a matrix (10-28 mesh; specific surface area=240 m2/g). This material was soaked in 25 wt.% AgNO3, dried at 80≦̸C, and reduced by boiling at 150≦̸C for 2 hrs. to give a catalyst. A mixt. contg. 7 M aniline and 1 M ethylene glycol was introduced into the reactor contg. a catalyst at the rate of 0.3 liter-mixt./1 liter-catalyst. At the same time, a mixt. contg. aniline and N2-gas (aniline; N2=1M:10M) was passed through the reactor. After reaction, the yield of ethylene glycol produced was 63% between 1 and 3 hrs. and 28% between 25 and 27 hrs.

Abstract: The present invention provides a method for selectively preparing dimethylamine and monomethylamine, while the production of trimethylamine is inhibited to a sufficiently low level, and the method comprises carrying out a gaseous reaction of methanol and ammonia by the use of a mordenite modified with a silylating agent by a silylation treatment in a liquid phase. According to the present invention, a step for recycling trimethylamine is unnecessary, and the amount of steam or the like to be used can be decreased.

Abstract: Methanol is decomposed in the presence of a catalyst containing chromium oxide and zinc oxide as main components and containing a compound of at least one element selected from alkali metals, alkali earth metals and lanthanides, while contents of iron and nickel in the catalyst are each maintained at 0.5% by weight or less. This process is characterised by (1) being excellent in stability at high temperatures, (2) preventing the catalyst from deteriorating, (3) inhibiting the production of by-products, and (4) obtaining a gas in which the CO/H2 ratio is high.

Abstract: Improved process for producing chlorine molecules comprises oxidn. of hydrochloric acid with molecular oxygen. This oxidn. process is carried out in the presence of a catalyst, and chromium oxide. The chromium oxide is prepd. by (1) chromium oxide is carried on a silicon oxide carrier which has a porosity of 0.3-1.8 cc/g, with amt. of carried chromium oxide evaluated as chromia, of 20-90 wt.%, (2) carried chromium oxide is heat treated at 450-700 deg.C. The chromium oxide catalyst is obtd. by contacting aq.soln. of chromate anhydride or chromium salt with silicon oxide, and then drying and heat treating. The oxidn. reaction is carried out in a flow process at a temp. 350-430 deg.C in the presence of molecular oxygen. The molecular ratio of oxygen to HCl lies between 0.25-5 and the flow rate of HCl is 200-1800 Nl/Kg catalyst/hour. The radius of the porous holes in the silicon oxide carrier lies between 20 and 300 Angstroms.

Abstract: In the process of producing chlorine by oxidizing hydrogen chloride with molecular oxygen, activity of the catalyst can be maintained for a long period with a high conversion ratio under high space velocity of gaseous raw materials without using additives as conventional methods, in the presence of a crystalline chromic oxide catalyst obtained by supporting relatively large amount of chromic oxide on a silicon oxide carrier having a specified pore volume.
