    Abstract: A portable radiotelephone with a keypad, alphanumeric character display, and hands free function is disclosed. A movable flip element of the housing covers a keypad and other control buttons when in a closed, on-hook, position and activates the illumination of the keypad, enables the display, and enables the hands free function when in an open, off-hook, position. The duration of keypad illumination and display activation are timed to reduce battery drain and the hands free function may be deactivated with a hookswitch flash.

    Abstract: A disposable portable radiotelephone subscriber unit (101) comprises a power supply (255), a transceiver (205, 207) and a controller (215). The power supply (255) has stored therein a predetermined measure of power capacity (281). The transceiver (205, 207) is permitted to operate for a predetermined period of time (405) responsive to the predetermined measure of the power capacity (281). The controller (215) monitors a rate of depletion of the predetermined measure of the power capacity (281). The controller (215) permits operation of the transceiver (205, 207) when the power capacity (281) is being depleted at a desirable rate, thereby decreasing the predetermined period of time (405) that the transceiver (205, 207) is permitted to operate. The controller (215) prevents operation of the transceiver (205, 207) when the power capacity (281) is being depleted at an undesirable rate, thereby prolonging the predetermined period of time (405) that the transceiver (205, 207) is permitted to operate. Alternatively, the power supply (255) may be a memory unit (259) and the power capacity (281) may be calling time (279) or a future electronic date (275).

The operating mode of portable telephone (100) also automatically changes when it is coupled to or decoupled from vehicular adaptor (200) during a cellular telephone call.     Abstract: The power control apparatus of the present invention is comprised of a local oscillator signal path coupled to a mixer (106) through a variable attenuator (107) and an IF signal path coupled to the mixer (106) through two variable attenuators (108 and 109) coupled in series. The IF signal path attenuators (108 and 109) are controlled by digital control circuitry (111) while the local oscillator path attenuator (107) is controlled by the control circuitry through a level shifter (110). The power level of the signal generated by the mixing of these two signals is less than the conducted output of the radiotelephone's power amplifier.
