    Abstract: In a method for minimizing a data bottleneck in a Low Data Rate Network (LDRN) (34), i.e. a facsimile network having a transmission rate less than the data rate of the facsimile machines serviced by the network, the LDRN (34) has a one-dimensional image data format and a two-dimensional image data format. The method comprises processing the facsimile transmissions in order to make the data rates of the LDRN and the FAX machines compatible, thereby minimizing any potential facsimile data bottlenecks that may occur in the LDRN due to its slower data rate. In the method, a first facsimile (FAX) machine (12) is set to the one-dimensional image data format; a data stream encoded in the one-dimensional image data format is sent (32) from the first FAX machine (12) to a first side of the LDRN (34); the data stream sent is uncompressed, and the uncompressed data stream is re-encoded into the two-dimensional image data format; the re-encoded data stream is transmitted from the first side of the LDRN (34) to a second side of the LDRN (34); the transmitted data stream is second uncompressed; the second uncompressed data stream is second re-encoded into the one-dimensional image data format; and the re-encoded data stream is second sent (36) from the second side of the LDRN (34) to a second FAX machine (16).

    Abstract: Synchronization and bit count integrity of a synchronous data stream is preserved end to end even as it is transmitted via a medium which does not preserve the synchronous nature of the synchronous data strea m. A terminal equipment unit (100) produces a constant rate bit stream which is provided to a communications unit (110). The communications unit (110) produces a first data frame comprising a first set of bits from the constant rate bit stream and a first length field value. A second data frame is produced which comprises a second set of bits from the constant rate bit stream and a second length field. A third data frame is produced which comprises a third set of bits from the constant rate bit stream and a third length field value. The first, second, and third data frames are transmitted to a base unit (118) which places the first set of bits from the first frame into a queue (150). A set of fill bits equal to the maximum number of bits contained in any frame is then placed into the queue (150). The base unit (118) then determines the number of bits in the second set of bits of the third data frame, based on the first length field value and the third length field value. The base unit (118) overwrites excess fill bits in the queue (150) with the third set of bits. The number of excess fill bits is equal to the difference between the maximum possible number of bits which may be contained in any frame and the number of bits in the secon d set of bits.

    Abstract: A communication system that allows a soft handoff to be completed, even when the communications link between the active base station and the mobile station deteriorates before the mobile station (101) has received the handoff direction message. The mobile station maintains a list of base stations that the mobile station (101) is in communication with, referred to as an "Active Set". In addition, the mobile station (101) maintains another list of base stations (300) that are proximate to the base stations (300) in the active set. This list is referred to as the "Neighbor Set". A memory within the mobile station (101) includes information that would allow the mobile station (101) to demodulate information transmitted from those base stations (300) on the neighbor set. In accordance with the disclosed method and apparatus, the mobile station (101) places a base station (300) in the active set upon including the base station (300) in a pilot strength measurement message (PSMM).
