Abstract: 484,099. Electron multipliers. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd. Oct. 30, 1936, No. 29527. Convention date, Oct. 30, 1935. [Class 39 (i)] An electron muliplier has separate resistances contained in the envelope and connected between certain electrodes for the purpose of establishing a potential between them. As shown in Fig. 5, the upper or accelerating electrodes 21 are parallel with the lower or secondary-emitting electrodes 23, and the resistances 41 are connected between some of the electrodes 23. The upper and lower electrodes are connected together in alternate pairs, and the last acelerating electrode has an extension 27 of wire cloth mounted in front of the output electrode 25. The electrodes are supported by parallel mica strips 29, 31, Figs. 2 and 3, and have lugs 33 bent over the edges of the mica strips and holding the resistances 41.. The strips and electrodes form a conduit, and the strips serve to focus the discharge by reason of the negative charge on them. The discharge may be controlled by a permanent or electromagnet. The upper electrodes are formed with openings 35 to permit caesium vapour to reach the lower electrodes freely during activation. The lower electrodes are of nickel coated with copper by plating in a cyanide bath for five minutes and then with silver by plating in a cyanide bath for one hour. Spacing of the electrodes during the fitting of the mica strips is effected by means of a mandrel. After the electrode assembly has been mounted, the envelope is sealed to a pump and baked at 475‹ C. for 2 to 3 hours. The electrodes are heated by high frequency current to remove occluded gas and oxygen is admitted by heating a side tube containing mercuric oxide. The first five or six lower electrodes are oxidized with a H.F. oscillator, and the others may be heated separately by condenser discharge. Oxygen is removed and caesium admitted from both ends of the envelope. Lead oxide may be used to prevent over-caesiation.. Specification 477,347 is referred to.
