Abstract: 734,586. Thermionic valves. RADIO CORPORATION OF AMERICA. April 16, 1952 [April 24, 1951], No. 9598/52. Class 39 (1). The deionizing time of a thyratron is reduced by providing means other than the cathode for heating at least a portion of the gas filling which is adjacent to the anode. In one arrangement, Fig. 2, a thyratron comprises an indirectly-heated cathode 12, a cylindrical control grid 13 having a slot 16, and an anode 14, contained in a gas-filled envelope 11. The heating means is an auxiliary discharge between a tungsten or thoriated tungsten filament 15 and a subsidiary anode 21. Alternatively, a small area of the grid 13 or of the main anode 14 may be used in place of the subsidiary anode 21, and the filament 15 may be replaced by an indirectly heated oxide type of cathode. The filament 15 is preferably positioned in alignment with the slot 16, although it may be positioned anywhere between the grid 13 and anode 14. In place of an auxiliary discharge, the filament 15 may be used alone as a simple resistive heater. In an alternative arrangement, Fig. 3, a subsidiary cathode 20 and anode 21 1 are located inside a box-shaped shield 19 adjacent a foraminated portion 17 of the anode 14 1 . The shield 19 may be polarized below the potential of the anode 14 1 to assist the drift of hot electrons through the portion 17 towards the interior of the anode. The tube may be connected across a condenser in a relaxation oscillator circuit for generating a sweep voltage for an oscilloscope, and is triggered by applying a pulse to the grid. In embodiments utilizing an auxiliary discharge as the heating means, a resistance is connected in the energizing circuit to limit the current of the auxiliary discharge to a very small value, since the auxiliary discharge is intended as a source of hot electrons and not as a source of plasma.

Abstract: 689,939. Discharge apparatus. RADIO CORPORATION OF AMERICA. Feb. 27, 1951 [March 10, 1950], No. 4771/51. Class 39(i). A thyratron has separate electrodes for performing the functions of initiating the discharge, and recovering control; in Fig. 2, the anode 19 and blocking grid 21 are concentrically disposed round cathode 16; the grid 21 has a longitudinal opening 28, in which is mounted the triggering electrode or " grid ", in the form of an elongated wire 27 of very small surface area. Two such wires, side by side and connected, may be used, Fig. 8 (not shown). Fig. 3 shows a suitable circuit for operating the device. The impedances RBG and RTG, in the blocking grid and triggering grid circuits respectively, may be of the order of 1000 ohms and 10 megohms respectively. In a modification, the triggering grid 32, Fig. 6, extends at right angles to the opening in the blocking grid, passing through a hole in the anode 34; an electrostatic shield 39 may further be provided round the trigger grid. It is stated that greater sensitivity to weak signal currents, improved stability and rapid recovery time are obtained, together with reduced capacitance and grid emission effects.
