Heading C2C. #-Captrolactam, obtained by the nitrozation of cyclohexyl compounds and containing amidetype volatile bases, is purified by treatment with an alkaline agent in the presence of water and of a halogen or an alkali metal hypohalite to convert the amide-type volatile bases into amine compounds which are then removed. The amine compounds may be separated from the #-caprolactam by use of an ion exchange resin. The crude #-caprolactam may be treated with a stream of gaseous halogen such as chlorine, followed by a solution of an alkali metal hydroxide, and the treatment may be carried out at a temperature of 0‹ to 70‹ C. at atmospheric or elevated pressures. The purification may also incorporate other stages already known in the purification of #-caprolactam, e.g. distillation.
