Abstract:
The invention is a process for the preparation of tapered block copolymers according to one of the formulae: B-t-A or A-B-t-A, wherein A comprises a polymer block derived from one or more monovinylidene aromatic monomers, B comprises a polymer block derived from one or more conjugated dienes, and t is a tapered polymer block derived from one or more monovinylidene aromatic monomers and one or more conjugated dienes wherein the portion of the block closest to block A is rich in monovinylidene aromatic monomer units, the portion of the block closest to block B is rich in conjugated diene units and the relative amount of conjugates diene and monovinylidene aromatic monomer units gradually changes along the backbone of the tapered block, comprising: a) contacting one or more conjugated dienes with a monofunctional lithium alkyl initiator or a polymer block derived from monovinylidene aromatic monomers with a terminal living lithium anion capable of initiating anionic polymerization and a hydrocarbon solvent, in a closed reactor equipped with a reflux condenser under conditions of reflux; b) partially polymerizing the one or more conjugated dienes; and c) after step b), contacting with the reaction mixture one or more monovinylidene aromatic monomers under conditions such that the unreacted conjugated diene and monovinylidene monomers polymerize; wherein the materials condensed during the process are recycled to the reactor.
Abstract:
The present invention provides a protective polymeric film which can be laminated to metal substrate (18) and which provides protection against scratches, solvents and corrosion. The film also exhibits good compressibility and sealability when used to form metal containers such as aerosol valve mounting cups, can domes, bodies, bottoms, and the like. The protective polymeric film includes a scratch-resistant layer (10) having a Shore D hardness of at least 60, an adhesive layer (14), and a compressible layer (12) positioned between the scratch-resistant and adhesive layers. In an alternative embodiment, the protective film includes a scratch-resistant layer and an adjacent compressible adhesive layer. The film may be laminated to a metal substrate by thermally activating the adhesive layer.
Abstract:
An extruder screw (10) for use in a barrel of an extruder for forwarding thermoplastic polymer from a first end to a second end of the extruder. The extruder comprises a transition section (14) and at least one flight (20) extending substantially along the length of the screw (10). A dam (24) is positioned at the point where the rapid melting of the solids starts to slow down and the rate of solid bed width decrease approaches zero. The dam (24) provides the screw with a high output of extrudate and close control of the residence time of polymer particles as they are transported through the screw (10), resulting in an extrudate which is uniformly melted and which is substantially free of degradation products and/or entrapped air.

Abstract:
A process for the removal of oxalate ion or control of the concentration thereof in aqueous solutions containing polyvalent metal chelates of organic acids is described, the process being characterized by precipitation of alkali metal oxalate.
Abstract:
The present invention is a free radical bulk polymerization process for the preparation of high molecular weight polymers from vinyl aromatic monomers, characterized in that the polymerization is conducted in the presence of a vinyl acid containing either a sulfur or phosphorus atom within the acid functional group.
Abstract:
Organic compounds are hydrogenated in the presence of certain mono- or bis(pentadienyl) divalent Group IV metal complexes. These titanium complexes are effective hydrogenation catalysts for polymers containing ethylenic unsaturation. They further provide for selective hydrogenation of ethylenic unsaturation sites in the presence of aromatic groups.
Abstract:
aitanium and zirconium complexes comprising a single, cyclic, delocalized pi -bonded ligand group wherein the metal of said complexes is in the +2 formal oxidation state are prepared in high yield and purity by reaction of titanium and zirconium halides in the +3 or +4 oxidation state with an n-alkyl Grignard reagent. The complexes are used as catalyst components for alpha -olefin polymerization catalysts.

Abstract:
The invention is a composition useful in preparing elastomeric articles which comprises: (a) from 70 to 95 parts by weight of one or more monovinylidene aromatic monomer conjugated diene block copolymer(s) and (b) from 5 to 30 parts by weight of a thermoplastic polymer comprising one or more of: i) a copolymer comprising a monovinylidene aromatic monomer and an anhydride; ii) polystyrene; iii) polyethylene; iv) an ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer, or a mixture thereof. At least 40 percent by weight of the block copolymers have the conjugated diene block comprised of isoprene. The weight percent of monovinylidene aromatic monomer in the block copolymer is from 10 to 35 percent by weight and the total block copolymer composition contains no more than 4 percent by weight of a diblock. The total parts of block copolymer and thermoplastic polymer is 100 parts. Films prepared from the composition exhibit a creep compliance of 1.5 MPa or less, a retention of 60 percent or greater as measured according to ASTM-D2991 at 30 minutes, and a permanent deformation of 10 percent or less as measured according to ASTM-D4649. In another embodiment, the invention comprises elastomeric articles comprising the composition of the invention.
